WBC lightweight champion Edwin Valero has come on the record and denied any reports that he was arrested in his native Venezuela for a domestic violence dispute where it was alledgedly stated that Valero has laid hands on his mother as well as his sister.
“I have never hit my little sister and obviously never my mother. This is just another attempt to provoke me and to stain my name,” Valero stated in a statement to Venezuelan television and posted on the network’s internet site.
According to press reports, Valero was arrested last week after a neighbor called the authorities and stated that the world champion had hit his mother and one of his sisters during a family altercation.
Eliosa Vivas, the mother of Valero, coincided with her son and stated:
“Neither did my daughter or myserlf were hit, pushed or anything of the sort by Edwin. There has never been aggression or bad treatment.”
The authorities in El Vigia, where Valero was raised, did not want to confirm or deny any of the allegations under the pretense that they are not willing to broach the subject with the press.
Valero, who lives in Japan and is undefeated in 25 professional fights with 24 of them coming in within the distace, has repeatedly stated that these attacks in the press are a “slander campaign” against him for his sympathetic views towards the pro-socialist Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez.
“All of us have our different idealogies and we expect for people to respect us,” Valero said adamently. “I am not a politician, I am an athlete.”
Valero, 27, has large tatoo of Chavez on his chest which he added after he was denied to jump in the ring with an image that many believed showed support towards Chavez.
It is rumored that Valero will defend his title against Antonio DeMarco in December in Caracas since his visa to enter the United States was denied earlier this summer.
I agree, I hope he gets to fight in Vegas soon.
Good Morning today October 2nd 2009. I am writing because Edwin Valeros deserve the opportunity to fight in Las Vegas Nevada or Atlantic City because he is a world class fighter that is undefeated with a Awesome record of 25 wins with 25 knockouts 100 percent Ko’s.
