WBO bantamweight champion Fernando Montiel said he is in the dark about a December 12 clash with former champion Gerry Penalosa. Montiel told ESTO that nobody has spoken to him about the fight and as far as he is concerned he will not fight until January.
Montiel is healing from the cut he suffered during the near-loss against Alex Valdez in September. Montiel’s doctor gave him the clearance to take a fight in December if he chooses to do so.
Montiel plans to return to the gym in November.
“There is no fight in December. Nobody has said anything about it. Chances are that in January 2010 I will fight for a title. My eyelid is healing well. The fight against Valdez taught me a few lessons. It was a bad night, as there are also good nights. I’m willing to give the rematch to Valdez, I’ll say it again, that it was a bad night and nothing else,” Montiel said.
