Bobby D. Presents with Coors Light and Top Shelf Promotions proudly present the third installment this year of their highly popular San Diego Boxing Series when on Thursday September 11th they bring “Summer Showdown” to the 4th and B in beautiful downtown San Diego. In the main event, former IBF minimum weight champion Roberto “Mako” Leyva (25-7-1, 20KO) of Ensenada, MX, takes a step towards the comeback trail when he takes on hometown spoiler Benji Garcia (12-10-3, 1KO) in a six round flyweight clash. The hard hitting Leyva, who captured the IBF 105 lbs. belt with a decisive twelve round unanimous decision over Colombian Daniel Reyes back in ’01, has been in the ring with many of the best that the smaller weights have to offer. With wins over former champions Manny Melchor and Victor Burgos, Leyva has also given stiff challenges to Miguel Barrera, Ivan Hernandez and current champion Ivan Calderon. In fact, Leyva has been one of only two fighters to send the undefeated Calderon to the canvas and the Puerto Rican “Iron Boy” has stated that Leyva has been his toughest fight to date. His opponent Garcia has also vast experience against the smaller division’s elite giving as much as they can handle to former champion Eric Ortiz as well as top prospects Giovanni Segura and Manuel Roman. He owns wins over such top rated prospects as Sergio Espinoza and Francisco Arce.
“I know in this fight I have a tough opponent in front of me, I am not looking past him but I hope with this win this will be my return to the top of the heap in my weight class,” Leyva stated excitedly.Â
In the semi main event, top amateur prospect Aaron Garcia (8-1, 2KO) of San Marcos, CA ventures south to the super bantamweight division for the first time as he takes on the always dangerous Torrence Daniels (10-4, 4KO) of Colorado Springs over six rounds. The former Golden Gloves champion and silver medalist in the ’03 Pan-American Games Garcia earned a victory over Daniels in the amateurs and now is prepared to repeat the effort in the pros. Adding to the intriguing match up is the experience in either corner as Joel Diaz trainer and brother of former champs Julio Diaz and Antonio Diaz as well as current WBC light welterweight champion Timothy Bradley will be in Garcia’s corner while Roger Mayweather, uncle and trainer of six divisional champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. will be in Daniels’.
Also featured in a six round super featherweight attraction is rising local top prospect Emilio Bojorquez (11-1, 9KO) of Tijuana, Mx. Bojorquez, who made his US pro debut in May when he destroyed Cesar Garcia of Ensenada in one round is coming off his biggest win to date when he stopped tough journeyman Arturo Valenzuela in three rounds after dropping him in the first with a vicious left hook to the jaw. “El Consentido de Tijuana” (Tijuana’s Favorite) is on an impressive KO streak with his last eight contests ending before the final bell.
Bojorquez is excited to show the San Diego boxing fans what he can do inside the ring, “I’m ready for anybody. I just want to keep on fighting and climb up that ladder. I know my team will put somebody in front of me that not only will give me a good fight but will teach me something”. Bojorquez will be faced off against the tough TBA.
Rounding out the card will be a battle between heavyweights when southpaw Anthony Mooney (2-1) tries to avenge his controversial split decision loss to Lawson Baker (5-2, 2KO) and up and coming undefeated light heavyweight Denis Grachev (4-0, 2KO) steps into the ring with his stiffest challenge to date in Terrance Smith (5-6-2, 3KO). Grachev is coming off his spectacular destruction of Caleb Caldwell back in July in only two rounds of a scheduled four.
The 4th and B is located at 345 B St. in downtown San Diego. The venue is 21+ with ID. Food and drinks will be serviced. Doors open at 6PM with the first punch thrown at 7PM. Tickets start at $25 and can be purchased at www.SDFights.com. For more info please dial 619.420.8866.
Ok here is my 2cents.
I like and respect very much Miguel Cotto, he is a class act and a amazing fighter, but you have to look at the facts, don’t be blinded by your fighter, I agree with you about him not being scared, he did took this fight and didn’t chicken out like the other ones did (De la Hoya, Mayweather) etc.. and know you see what happen, the same thing those guys knew it could and can happen when fighting Margarito.
Cotto when in there and gave his best, fought a great fight, but to be really honest, how much punish ment you think some one should need to get to win a fight? and if you see at the score cards Margarito was winning on 2 of the judges, so he would have lost anyways and was going to get a bigger beating, even Cotto said his health and family is more important to him.
And it seems like you don’t know Margarito, he started boxing as a pro, did not have a amateur carrier, before that loss to Paul Williams most of those loses came when he started, with no experience what so ever.
What happen here is that Margarito took Cottos best shots but Cotto could not handle the ones from Margarito, plain and simple, to say if Cotto could have done this or that it would have been different, well yeah, he could have knock him out, but he didn’t and that is reality.
Margarito with his size and his straight will be a tough opponent to beat, even Paul Williams was almost going down in the later rounds and it would be interesting to see them fight again.
So to resume things, Cotto is an amazing boxer, love to see him fight, class act like no other in the sport and he will be back for sure, my hat goes out to this amazing fighter.
Margarito is not some guy who does not care about his record so he goes all crazy to try to get the knock out. He has one of the best chins in boxing right now and has a tremendous punch and stamina.
If your a Cotto fan try to accept the loss, know that he fought a very good fight, (anyone should be proud of the way Cotto boxed that night) even Cotto said it and know that he will be back.
I don’t really see the point of fighting Margarito again, wars like that will wear a fighter like Morales and Gatti wore, and Cotto doesn’t seem to like the idea anyways and I don’t blame him, but there is much more to do out there. No doubt he will be back in top.
Da comment was to da Miguel Cotto situation. lol sry.
Well honestl not only bcuz im one of miguels biggest fan and a boxer my self. Its not that hes scared.. cuz he proved that by facing antonio to begin with. and took him to 11 rounds. just needed to last one more. what he did wrong was he forgot about his strategy.which is kill the body and the head will die its his mado. he wasnt thinking so mmuch. knowing antonio is a under dog who wants to win. but if u look at it b4 the 11 round he was getting destroyed by points and percenteges.. mayb won 2..and this loss to a guy who is rival race. is big and also a guy who goes for k.o’s only bcuz he already has so many losses. he doesnt care to take a chance in having one moreWat the match was ..Luck. 2be honest. you just gotta look up the stats and info and plans they both had and put them 2gether..He’ll DEF. b back 4sure. he isnt scared of no one. miguels gonna be on top once again. when he gets back.. a Promise from me 2 u…
