There’s hope for Andre Berto

Leading up to the fight, Andre Berto was a favorite against Robert Guerrero. Although this was a toss up fight, Berto was considered to have the tools to beat Guerrero. Those who did believe Guerrero would pull off the upset (including me) thought that he would do this through technical boxing and finesse around the ring. What fans witnessed was Guerrero and Berto slugging it out in a phone booth for twelve rounds. After the second round, I texted my buddy, “If Berto gets through this, this will be a fight!” Indeed it was. With two knockdowns and domination within the early rounds, Guerrero imposed his will and muscled Berto into fighting a very entertaining brawl.

In a valiant comeback attempt, Berto showed what has brought him this far- pure physical talents in power and speed. In the 6th, I said to the room- “Berto needs to unleash his right uppercut if he wants a chance in this fight.” Indeed, Berto did unleash blistering right uppercuts turning Guerrero’s head as though he was imitating scenes from the Exorcist. Unexpectedly, Guerrero seemed unaffected. Time after time, Guerrero took these shots and continued to fight.

Deservingly, Guerrero’s hand was raised in victory. He outworked, out landed, and handled Berto exactly how he said he planned. With this, Guerrero puts himself as a top 147-pound threat ready to go to war and put on a show with the best.

Even more interestingly is Berto’s future. Berto is a full-fledged welterweight with the heart of a lion and physical gifts equal to some of the greatest in the sport. As many have mentioned, this is what happens when you are moved up the ranks without learning how to truly fight, which exposed when matched with prime fighters at an elite level. Stepping up against Victor Ortiz led to Berto’s first loss.

In a comeback against Jan Zaveck, I believe Zaveck would have given Berto serious problems and a possible second loss had the fight continued. In this step, Berto suffered his second loss against Robert Guerrero.

In the fight, flashes of power showed as Berto landed devastating right uppercuts and showed astounding speed. With these natural abilities, Berto should be a top 10-pound for pound fighter at this point. Due to poor technical skills and a lack of ring smarts, Berto relies on heart and his athletic gifts. In his future, his current situation allows him to be in entertaining, toss up scraps with tons of prime welterweights. Unless a huge change in training occurs, expect Berto to win some and lose some. Hopefully, fans will not have
to suffer a comeback fight similar to Berto-Freddy Hernandez as he is far past those gimme fights in his career (at least on HBO, he can fight those type of fighters every day on off-TV cards).

There is hope for Berto. With some education to enhance his boxing decisions and ring generalship, Berto can become a serious force at the elite level.
