The return of Paul Williams or the establishment of Nobuhiro Ishida?

In an interesting match-up, Paul Williams faces Nobuhiro Ishida on Showtime on Saturday, Feb. 18. Williams, who was known for his long reach, iron chin, and being one of the most feared and exciting fighters in boxing, has a new reputation in boxing. The Punisher, who has two recorded losses (Erislandy Lara beat Paul, forget the scorecards), is now fighting the man who caused one of the biggest upsets of the last year.

Nobuhiro Ishida was meant to play the role of a hurt gazelle being hunted down and brutally taken out by the lion that is James Kirkland. The gazelle jumped, kicked, and let that lion know he was hunting with the wrong crew. Kirkland was knocked down three times en route to a first round TKO, catapulting the Japanese native into middleweight title contention. Not only did Ishida show that he was a game and very competent fighter, but Kirkland the wake up call to reunite him with Ann Wolfe.

With Ishida’s rising stock and Williams struggling to hold on to headline potential, will meet in an interesting match up next weekend.

  1. This should be an easy fight to get Williams on track again, but he needs to fight Lara again because he lost that fight no matter what the scorecards told. Ishida had himself a good night against Kirkland and deserves the payday and exposure from that win, but I don’t expect him to do the same against Williams.
