In the co-feature of the Bernard Hopkins-Chad Dawson light heavyweight showdown, heavyweight Seth Mitchell provided an impressive stoppage of contender Chazz Witherspoon. Witherspoon who had experience fighting top 10 ranked heavyweights (losses, but experience) came in as a solid test for Mitchell. With interesting back stories, both men hold college degrees and started boxing at an old age, presented an entertaining 3 round fight.
Chazz Witherspoon, who had success as an amateur and fought more seasoned professionals, was the challenger against the popular former Michigan State football player who has been deemed as one of America’s heavyweight hopefuls. The winner of the fight would be thrown further up in the batch of heavyweight contenders.
Round one proved entertaining with America’s next heavyweight hope almost going down the drain. The less popular Witherspoon rocked Mitchell, and visibly hurt him. Mitchell looked ready to go down as the referee looked ready to step in. Even with all his experience, Chazz looked to finish without patience and poise. The bell rang and Mitchell made it to his corner.
Round two would show whether or not Mitchell had the ability to recover and heart to continue. Mitchell proved to the world that although he may not be the best boxer in the world, he is strong physically and mentally. Throughout the second, Mitchell dug 
to the body. He began to dig to the body. In close quarters, Mitchell dug. And dug. And continued digging. The bell rang, and Witherspoon looked as though he had just boxed 10 hard rounds as he slowly made it to the stool. This was the turning point of the fight. The excitement of Witherspoon in the first when he hurt Mitchell, led to an impatient attempt to try and finish the fighter, running his energy low, which was drained by the devastating body shots from Mitchell in the second.
The third round led to a beautifully placed left hook from Mitchell which floored Witherspoon. Mitchell brought an onslaught of power, stopping Witherspoon against the ropes.
With two fights under his belt on HBO, Mitchell has proven to be an entertaining heavyweight. He is still growing as a fighter, but has the physical talent and desire to be a top contender.
With the Klistchko’s still dominating, Mitchell have a puncher’s chance, and a small puncher’s chance at that. Matching Mitchell up with Tomasz Adamek, Bryant Jennings- who provided one of the most exciting heavyweight fights on television in recent years, and Cris Arreola would be TV friendly. The important part is that there is now some heavyweight’s worth watching, at least for the entertainment factor.
Its Witherspoon fault for not finishing him in the first round.. is like what happen with Alfredo Angulo he had James K. but couldn’t finish the job and what happens the tables turn.
Seth Mitchell showed his toughness and his heart in this one (good for him). I would also like to see him fight Arreola. Mitchell also showed his ring smarts by going hard to the body and breaking Witherspoon down, nice job.
I thought Seth Mitchell showed improvement by weathering the early storm by Witherspoon. But it’s WAY too soon to even think of fighting the K-Bros. Arreola would be worth watching.
@ Edgar I agree, he should fight Arreola or even consider calling Haye out of retirement. I think either fight would be entertaining.
