Three time world champion in as many weight divisions and current WBC International welterweight champion Erik “Terrible” Morales stated that the next bout of his comeback would be on July 17th in either the city of his birth Tijuana, Mx, or Cancun, MX.
“We don’t have an opponent yet but it might be Jore ‘La Hiena’ Barrios at 140 lbs.,” Morales recently said.
Morales, who held world titles in the super bantamweight, featherweight and super featherweight division, also mentioned who else might flesh out the card.
“In the semi main event, Jesus ‘Negrito’ Silvestre, the current WBC youth strawweight champion would face Nicaragua’s Roman ‘Chocolatito’ Gonzalez for the WBA title,” Morales added. “Alejandro Sanabria would also be on the card.”
Morales also stated that by the end of the year or the beginning of the next he would be going after his fourth title.
“But first I need to be in condition, I must be fully prepared,” he said. “I will continue to prepare myself in the Otomi Mountains.”
He also said that he would feel more comfortable in the jr. welterweight division.
“I am happy to fight at 140 lbs. I would look when I punch and with speed,” Morales concluded. “I will be very well prepared in that division. I will have the needed strength.”
Morales is one of my favorite fighters. I am also from Tijuana. I am also realistic. Morales needs to beat a top dog at 140 lbs before he can challenge for a world title at that weight. I don’t see him beating Maidana, Tim Bradley or anyone else of that caliber at this stage of his comeback. Going back to train in the Otomi mountains is a good idea. He should pay close attention to this weekend’s fight between Khan and Malignaggi. That’s what awaits him in the 140 lbs weight class.
im happy to hear news about my idol i hope to se him in better condition this time, we probably wont see him at his best ever again but its always a pleassure to see El Terrible on the ring. cant wait to see him fight !
