WBO welterweight champion Miguel Cotto continues to enjoy his vacation after his successful February 21st victory over England’s Michael Jennings. Cotto stated to Rey Colon of the Puerto Rican daily El Vocero that he still does not know who is dance partner will be for his now traditional June 13th bout at the legendary Madison Square Garden in New York City on the eve of that city’s Puerto Rican day parade. Cotto also stated that he will soon be returning to the Bairoa gym to begin his preparation.
“I am still enjoying my vacation and when I have the news then I will be sure to share it. We expect that by mid April being in gym warming up the engines. I don’t have a preference for my next opponent. We need to get together with my promoter, see the pros and cons for each opponent and choose the ones that fits us better,” Cotto stated.
It has tentatively been confirmed that the IBF welterweight belt holder Joshua Clottey might be his next rival since that is the fight that HBO is most interested in.
“We will see which one is the best option for us. After our meeting, we will see. I will get ready like always for the fight but there are many other issues that need to be discussed such as the financial aspect plus other guarantees that come with the fight and that is what we need to do,” he explained.
Cotto’s promoter, Bob Arum, has stated that a bout with Manny Pacquiao is a possibility by the end of year.
“I can’t comment on that. We are open to fight the big names but I can’t comment on a fight for the end of the year when the one in June is not finalized. I am hoping to fight at least two more times before the end of the year,” Cotto concluded.
