Will This May 5 Megamatch Go Down?

Social media reached an all-time high when controversial superstar Floyd Mayweather Jr. uttered three little words on his Twitter account: “Step up Punk.”

That phrase was issued to his ring rival, the one and only Manny Pacquiao, whom “Money” Mayweather put on blast during his two Tweets: “Manny Pacquiao I’m calling you out let’s fight May 5th and give the world what they want to see.”

“My Jail Sentence was pushed back because the date was locked in. Step up Punk.”

Step up, punk.

How will the Filipino icon respond?

The boxing community was set on fire with the Internet pushed into a frenzy over those three words that has echoed loudly.

Is the ball now solely in Pacman’s court after Mayweather put in him on such public blast around the globe?

And speaking of “court,” Floyd will not have to fulfill his 87-day jail sentence until June, which he says leaves plenty of time to make this desired clash happen.

May 5 is the chosen date; the MGM Grand the location.

Will the pound-for-pound kings meet in the Mecca of boxing–at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas where “Money” Mayweather has already booked his date with destiny?

The world waits for an opponent to be named.

There has been endless speculation about who will go toe to toe against Mayweather.

Lately, the rumors have spiked that it will be Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero or possibly even Canelo.

For Pacquiao, word on the street is that his “To Do” list has four names in the running for a prospective fight in June: Juan Manuel Marquez, Miguel Cotto, Timothy Bradley or Lamont Peterson.

But the only fight it seems that boxing fans want to see is Mayweather vs. Pacquiao.

Again, will this marquee matchup between the world’s two biggest champions ever really go down?

So many questions remain with the majority of boxing fans all but pegging Hall of Fame promoter Bob Arum as Lucifer himself for “not making this fight happen” after word got around that the Top Rank legend reportedly said Manny has to heal from a cut suffered after his November bout against Marquez. Instead of Mayweather playing out his usual “bad guy in the black hat” role, it’s now Arum that everyone wants to crucify for supposedly blocking a fistic war between the two titans.

IF and when the power punchers ever do meet in the ring, the hype and buildup would be of epic–and record breaking–proportions.

Can you imagine all the trash talking Mayweather (and his colorful family) will do? After all he does have a way with words: “STEP UP PUNK.”

Those three words continue to reverberate in boxing circles sending ripples around the universe.

It’s on all forms of social media and I saw this infamous Twitter message showcased on both local and national news broadcasts on TV. You can’t escape it. I’ve even seen betting sheets in the Nevada casinos with odds “if” the megafight were to take place in 2012. Mayweather has the edge in this one, according to the sports book wizards, with the southpaw Congressman the “dog” in this fight game, should it take place.

Controversy sells and Mayweather is the master at it.

Whether you are intrigued–or disgusted–by what he says or does, you can’t help but pay attention to every little thing he says or does! He owns it.

And controversy will translate into huge ticket sales and PPV buys one can only imagine if this pair of powerhouse rivals should ever meet. The hype machine would be in overdrive once the contracts are signed. Millions upon millions are waiting to be made.

But many critics say if the two titans are planning on an encounter in the ring it better be sooner–rather than later.

Floyd will turn 35 next month and Manny just turned 33 in December.

Although if you’re Bernard Hopkins, age is just a number.

Mayweather’s last bout was his September win over Victor Ortiz; Pacquiao’s latest victory was against Juan Manuel Marquez in November.

Former pro fighter Rick Farris sums it rather succinctly. “They are not getting better as we wait, they are getting older,” the ex-prizefighter who fought at the famed Olympic Auditorium tells me. “Each risks losing a fight to another boxer, as many believe Pac did to Marquez, which will further compromise the value or interest in the fight. The time for this fight isn’t tomorrow, it was yesterday. It’s decreasing in value every day.”

Now the world waits as the clock ticks–and the calendar inches closer to May 5. In June, Floyd Jr. will have to serve out his jail sentence where as everyone says in prison “A Punk and a Bunk” awaits.

But first, the world awaits this explosive showdown.

This is THE fight everyone wants to see; the talk and innuendo continues to rise.

What do you think? Will this monster collision happen on May 5?

MAYWEATHER VS. PACQUIAO.

One War. Two Superstars. No Time To Waste.

STEP UP.

  1. @Johnnyboy I’m not predicting who’s going to win or lose just imagining what Mayflower might do, cuz we all know he wont exchange with Manny. I honestly don’t care who wins at this point but it’s still going to be interesting to watch. Who wins, the best defence or the best offence. Thats basicly what it all comes down to.

  2. @ Jonnyboy your right!! Fm will pic PAC apart all night long,,, he won’t knock him out but he will make him look a very bad boxer,,

  3. @ Jay & “daddy” I hate to point it out but it seems now that the fight has little promise of actually happening there are already excuses for the catchweight king (yes that is Pacquiao) as to why he may lose. My opinion of Pacquiao is that he’s a warrior and he’s very talented. Mayweather spells poison for him, as he does for most of the aggressive type. I’m looking at this from a viewpoint of a Boxing fan and Mayweather should and probably will take the win. It does not matter if it ain’t flashy he simply has a better chance to win. If it doesnt happen though screw them both because they dont care about legacy just money. Just saying if it does i’d rather put money on the defense of Mayweather over the aggression of Pacquiao.

  4. I think your right daddy, and thats exactly what Mayflower will do. He’ll pop shot manny and hide ALL KNIGHT LONG and turn what should be a great fight into one of his stink bomb, boring ass fights and pray these sellout judges in Vegas will give him a decision. Manny better his hands up too or might catch a succerpunch lol.

  5. Now let’s see, Monet May used every excuse and boldly dodged any question in the past about fighting Manny. Now, after Manny had a very disappointing performance against Marquez, Mayweather has the balls to demand a fight with Manny. However, May wouldn’t even discuss a fight with Manny in the past, therefore that would lead me to believe he (May) was concerned an knew he didn’t have a chance at winning against PacMan. That proves Floyd wasn’t and isn’t as confident in hiss skills as he would want us to believe. If the fight happens Floyd will be on the defense and pop shot Manny throughout the fight, but if Manny can land one clean powerful blow May will go to sleep. We have to remember an old and past his prime Shane Mosley caught May early in their fight an rocked and buckled pretty boys legs quite easily. Now if a past his prime fighter like Mosley can buckle May then what do you think will happen if a K.O. King like Manny hits him with one clean shot. I agree Manny looked totally unlike the fighter we all know he is in his last fight, but I believe with certainty Manny will put May to sleep with one real power shot that he will land at some point. It is boxing.

  6. The real PUNK has his bunk ready!
Can he make more excuses/alibi/strategy to delay his bar vacation? If ever the contract with pacquiao be signed. He might suddenly get sick and be hospitalized. He might go to jail anyway, and Jossie will be safe!

  7. May weather knows how 2 beat any fighter that he fights b/c it’s his fighting style. He of coarse is a defensive fighter buy he still does fight in ordere win n it does matter weather any one thinks that he is running or not.” so how can a gun win a fight while he is running n the point is ppl can say whatever they want b/c at the end of the day he wins all his fights by fighting n pinching that’s how ppl win fights n I guess win he knocked out most of his fighters he was running 2.” huh! So ppl say some of the most ignorant things Just b/c the may not like him.” so if ur going 2 say something say it with truth.” yes bob is afraid that may weather will lose n that y they won’t make it happen b/c even though be is the Devil himself he still is a smart Buisness man 2 Truely understand that manny does hv what it takes 2 beat Floyd n everybody else thats hating knows this same thing but Just 2 ignorant with there person feeling 2 admitt it b/c of how they feel about Floyd.” This is Real Talk.”

  8. LOTS of people would also pay to see Mayweather fight Sergio Martinez!!!!
But Mayweather would never fight ‘Maravilla’ …….. enough said.

  9. If it doesn’t happen this year, it never will. Manny is supposed to tell Arum he wants this fight more than any other fight. He shouldn’t just say it he should DEMAND it. Otherwise whoever they fight I have no interest in it and will not waste my hard earned money on Pacquiao/Bradley or Mayweather/Guerrero. We know the results even before either fight happens. It must be hard for Pacquiao that his promoter for some reason does not want to make this fight happen. My honest opinion is that Arum does not believe Manny can win and he can lose his biggest cash cow’s selling ability.

  10. I don’t understand. First it was Mayweather that didn’t want to fight. He was making excuses that Manny needed to take an antidoping test, and then Manny said he would fight but he won’t take any tests because his blood and whatever. Now Mayweather is not asking for any tests but Manny is complaining about a cut that never happened. So what are they playing? although, i’m not looking forward for this fight because it will be a very boring fight. One guy running around the ring (as usual) and the other just jumping trying to land punches, which i doubt he will land. Now that Mayweather saw the fight against Marquez he knows how to box Manny and now he wants to fight.
BS with the boxing these days. We need new boxers, new prospects. Promoters should give opportunities to new and young fighters.
