Video Interview with “La Alacrana”
The women will rumble in the ring THIS Friday, May 16 at the special triple-header night of championship boxing presented by Thompson Boxing Promotions (TBP). This event will take place at the DoubleTree Hotel in Ontario, Calif., timed to coincide with the promotional company’s 14th-year anniversary in the boxing biz. In honor of this milestone, there will be a FREE commemorative souvenir available to fight fans in attendance while supplies last!
At a recent press conference introducing the three championship bouts, I caught up with IFBA Light Flyweight champ Sindy “La Alacrana” Amador after the speeches and face offs were complete. Thompson Boxing President Ken Thompson and General Manager Alex Camponovo both look forward to celebrating TBP’s 14 years in the sweet science. They have featured many champions through the decade and a half of live fights at the DoubleTree and the Omega Products International Arena and have a full stable of talent.
And now comes a “chick fight” that promises to have even the most jaded boxing fan cheering on their feet.
Representing women’s boxing will be Amador (11-1, 1 KO) vs. Suarez (8-0-1), who were both in attendance at the recent event. Amador was at the media event with trainer Ruben Castanon and manager Charlie Perez, owner of Capital Punishment Boxing Club in Riverside. The brunette is known for her nonstop punching inside the ropes and for her tough-as-nails demeanor in the ring.
The petite pugilist will be locking claws with her foe Maria Suarez in a clash scheduled for ten rounds on this “New Blood” card. The main event and co-main will be Jose “El Gato” Roman and Luis Solis for the WBC CABOFE Lightweight title and Juan “Pochito” Reyes vs. Isaac “Dinamita” Zarate for the vacant NABF Junior Super Bantamweight belt.
Outside of the ring, this female warrior is very polite, smiling often, flaunting the latest fashions. Feminine and ladylike, spectators shouldn’t be fooled once she steps in the squared circle. She is one tough cookie. Sindy spars with men; she actually prefers the challenge if that tells you anything about this pint-sized show stopper who’s ring name translates to “The Scorpion.”
Hmmm. FLOAT LIKE A BUTTERFLY…STING LIKE A “SCORPION”?!
Sindy leaves it all in the ring and come this Friday night, she aims to walk out victorious with her white and gold belt still strapped around her waist. The claws will come out.
On Friday night, the Moreno Valley fighter will defend her IFBA belt (which she won in her October 2013 bout against San Diego’s Amaris Quintana). Sindy will be trading shots with the unbeaten Suarez from Santa Maria, Calif. They share a common opponent in the scrappy Jolene Blackshear. Suarez beat Blackshear while Amador was defeated by Blackshear. During her time on stage, a steely Suarez said: “Amador won’t be holding that belt for much longer. She had a hard time with Blackshear while I made it look easy. I’m confident that the belt is coming home with me.”
A confident Amador quickly countered, “I’ll be ready to defend my title.”
When the bell rings, don’t count on either women backing down. The ladies will ignite with a flurry of punches that Inland Empire fans have witnessed at each and every “La Alacrana” fight. This 10-round battle (two-minute rounds) promises to be a combustible matchup with fireworks on the canvas.
Standing barely 5 feet tall and weighing in at 108 soaking wet, Amador lives–and loves–the boxing life. The long, lonely gym hours and rugged roadwork that prizefighters absorb has not deterred her one iota. She remains ambitions and hungry for more. During our video interview below, Sindy talks about her humble beginning while working as waitress, literally juggling plates at the restaurant while balancing boxing training in her busy schedule. Hard to believe this tiny tornado was 50 pounds heavier not so long ago.
But she fell in love with the sport of boxing and everything it entailed. The good and bad of the sport, the highs of becoming a champ and the lows of feeling that first defeat. And the extra pounds on her small frame dropped off with every swing at the heavybag. Now strong and lean with rippling abs, Amador continues to strive for more.
Becoming a professional fighter is not for everyone. And finding success in this brutal business is even harder for a female in a male-dominated sport.
But one should never underestimate the power of a woman with drive, determination and motivation to succeed.
At the Thompson Boxing presser, Sindy handled everything with grace, answering questions in her natural soft-spokenness. Not a single eyelash out of place and lipstick intact, the Mexican-American gladiator was wearing an eye-catching dress while rockin’ the high heels.
“I’m a woman, I’m a lady…I like to look pretty,” she says with a giggle. “But at the same time I like to work hard and I LOVE boxing and I’m not afraid to look all sweaty or dirty during training or a fight!”
“She is tiny but dangerous,” Charlie Perez tells me of his rising star with the heart of someone ten times her size. And the venom of a feisty champ who plans on keeping her title.
Sindy “La Alacrana” Amador is ready to sting on Friday night during this historic triple-header of action with Thompson Boxing Promotions.
AMADOR vs. SUAREZ for the IFBA glory.
May the best woman win.
