By Nick Giongco of Fightnews:
Manny Pacquiao deserves the juicier and bigger slice of the pie in his proposed No. 14 showdown with Miguel Cotto, trainer Freddie Roach told Fightnews and Manila Bulletin early Monday evening (Tuesday morning in Manila). “70-30,” said Roach when told about Pacquiao lawyer Franklin Gacal’s insistence that the Filipino deserves not less than 65-35 in the revenue split with Cotto. Roach noted that Cotto doesn’t have a strong pay-per-view history unlike Pacquiao, who is a certified box-office hit. Cotto posted 450,000 buys when he faced Antonio Margarito of Mexico in July last year, while Pacquiao has generated record-breaking numbers in his last two outings—1.25 million buys against Oscar De La Hoya and close to a million versus Ricky Hatton. Pacquiao got a guarantee of over $12 million against Hatton and the 48-year-old corner man believes there’s no other way but up as far as the purse is concerned. “We’re not supposed to be going backwards.”
The weighty issue of the catchweight has apparently been resolved with Roach agreeing to a 144-145 catch weight. “One pound wouldn’t make any difference,” said Roach, who has been calling the shots in Pacquiao’s corner since mid-2001.
Hall of Fame promoter Bob Arum said the MGM Grand will host the fight and that accommodating Pacquiao’s request that the fight be held much earlier–Oct. 17–is not a good idea, business-wise.
“We’ve told Manny about fighting on that date, and not on Oct. 17, because of the World Series,” Arum said. “You can’t compete with free TV and baseball is big among Puerto Ricans. We’ll be charging $50 for them to watch us and we can’t compete with free television.”
Arum has given Pacquiao associate Mike Koncz the proposal for Pacquiao and Gacal to review next week. Arum said the proposal is “very fair” to both parties.
Arum plans to finalize the deal in two weeks time, or by the end of the month, so he could immediately set the timeline for the megabout. If everything turns out well, Arum would bring Pacquiao and Cotto to New York and Puerto Rico for the promotional tour. Another stop would either be Los Angeles or San Francisco. Cotto is a huge star both in the Big Apple and in Puerto Rico.
Well said Bori !, I’ll probably be in Vegas for this one, we should meet up if anyone is going.
whats going on mr. brown-jay-tijuana how yall been. who is this guy johnny doesnt he know that cotto is puertorican not mexican??? by the way pacman hasnt fought any big name puertoricans. learn about boxing and dont be a racist we all bleed red
Grow up Johnny Kid, pay some respect to all of the great boxers, Manny is a great fighter and you should learn some manners from him, he has always respected his opponents that’s why me or anyone can’t say anything bad about him, he’s a class act. Grow up and learn some manners kid.
Boxing is about skills, art and respect, not acting like an idiot, go watch some WWE.
Hey johnny,
You should Pay attention to brown , watch your mouth and have some respect. You sound like an A-whole. Thats all i’ll say about that.
coming back to boxing , yea 70-30 thats not wright. Roach is crazy the only reason pacmans fights made as much money as they did was cuz of the opponents he had. Delahoya and hatton are alot bigger names than margarito. Pacman is making more money than he ever did before ,he should’nt get greedy.
You know what Johnny…..Your a looser,
You should be careful with your words don’t bring Mexicans and Puertoricans, stick to saying that Manny will beat Cotto instead. You sound racist, be careful and show some respect and be a man. I’m black and I don’t talk like that about other fighter, I don’t care where they are from as long they are good fighters that all it matters.
Manny KO cotto easily. most big fighter like cotto are a slow and weak fighter when they face a fighter like pacman. Imagine pacman kicking most mexican fighter legend ass. whooping them easily and humiliating like a chimpanzee…no offense to cotto fan. but cotto is just to slow for pacman. pacman make cotto like a punching bloody bag!! like he did with diaz!!! PACMAN LOVE FIGHTING MEXICAN, PUERTO RICANS BECAUSE THEY MADE PACMAN FAMOUS!! pacman whooping their asses easily!!!!
The only way cotto have a chance of winning against pacman..is dream ON!!! hahaha!!!
its should be 65% for manny pacquiao and35% for Cotto ,this will be. good fight
60-40 is more reasonable, As for the favorite it would be Pacquaio.
70-30 is an insult too be honest. As for Cotto if this fight actually get written in ink, he is going too be in for a long long night with Manny Pacquaio.
I take it the fight will be at 145 catch weight at tops no lower then that.
i think 70-30 is a dam joke manny better show he wants this fight 60-40 is alittle better. cotto isnt a chump to be giving him garbage like that if he really wants to fight cotto he is not killing himself by a 60-40 or 65-35
i don’t think so tha pacguiao get 70-30 i think should be 60-40 slip an a remach. this. is not a chip fight miguel cotto fough with the bes
This is business. We still don’t know what will happen. There will be a lot of negotiations that will take place.
NO. 70/30 is a joke. 55/45 or even 60/40 but anything else is a slap in the face of Cotto and probably just the initial bargaining chip by team Pac.
Pacquiao is the #1 P4P King and the better fighter, so he gets 70%. Cotto is better at 30%.
For Bob Anus… ooops! my mistake, Arum, I mean. He’s sure win on both fighters. Damn Bob, he always get a lot on both guys beating the hell out of each other.
if Paquiao Cotto will happen it will be,70 30 100..70 for paquiao..30 for cotto..2 fighters will give arum’s commission..arum gets 100% commissions..wow…wow..
It should be 70- 30 on Mosley instead,….LOL…He even said he is willing to take less of the purse and drop the weight as well, what more can you ask for……LOL…Make this fight dam well happen……LOL
