Not long ago former pound for pound kingpin Floyd Mayweather Jr. was interviewed by Brian Kenny of ESPN. Not a minute into the interview, Mayweather took exception to being called the “former” pound for pound champ and stated “I already forgot who I was talking to, Brian Kenny, a guy who has never laced up gloves a day in his life, who don’t know nothing about boxing.” The interview goes downhill from there.
First of all, that is a double negative and grammatically incorrect.
Second, its classic Mayweather.
As Gabriel Montoya pointed out in an excellent piece for MaxBoxing.com, Mayweather is a man of many contradictions. Most of them pretty blatant. What I find more annoying is the statement that was quoted earlier.
According to Mayweather, Kenny has no right to an opinion because he has not “laced up gloves a day in his life”. I find that absurd.
The fact that Mayweather is arguably the best fighter of his generation is one thing and his boxing IQ is through the roof but Kenny has every right to an opinion, whether he has ever stepped into a ring or not.
Just like a movie critic has a right to give his opinion on a film even if has never directed one or a food critic can write about an entree even if he can’t boil an egg.
Brian Kenny, like many other boxing journalist as the afore mentioned Montoya or Steve Kim or Thomas Hauser among many others, have the uncanny ability to put their thoughts about the sweet science on paper or in interviews in an eloquent and thought provoking way that is entertaining for us, the boxing fans.
With newspaper coverage of our sport dwindling to almost nothing, ESPN, HBO, Showtime and all the internet scribes is all the sport has to make it relevant.
For one of the so called superstars of boxing to try to belittle Kenny for calling him out on his contradictions regarding his career is ridiculous.
But from Mayeather, I wouldn’t expect any less.
You have to admit, Floyd does have some good points.
LOUDMOUTH Mayweather. If he’s the best why not fight the best right now!
PBF said there are a lot of excusesa dn critisism made by people on his wins. It’s true but you also did have when Kenny tried to talk on Bob Arum. You’re saying you have ISSUES with Bob. Suck my dick PBF! Do something then get on with the real superstar like Manny! CHICKEN Floyd!
Manny Pacquiao statements are revealed during the fight on top of the boxing ring. Not in this kind of crap interview!
I added the interview the article. Enjoy its a good one!!
Abdullah….your right on point. I watched that interview as well. Kenny is an idiot. He should be fired…….just because he doesn’t know what i the hell he is talking about. As a journalist you should have all the fact. That was quite embarrassing.
Man first of all, Kenny didn’t know what he was talking about floyd asked him if pacman had ever been knocked down and kenny said no..huh then floyd asked if pacman had ever lost? kenny’s reply..no at least not to my knowledge..so floyd had a right to say what he said.. I mean what journalist whould interview somebody and not no, the people he’s mentioning records.. unfortunatly that’s classic kenny ….Salams me Hente’s
To all the people commenting here, keep in mind:
To floyd, even though you pay his check, he doesn’t give a shit about you, or what you think, and you have no right to judge him or his boxing performance.
To floyd, you people aren’t qualified to call him great, because none of you know shit about boxing.
Floyd is the man. Kenny is a pussy.
Does it makes sense???
It does.
Who needs this dillhole Kenny?
We pay money to see Money, not Kenny.
If Kenny will commit suicide, nobody will even remember him.
Floyd is one of the greatest of all time boxer, and he will be remembered.
Kenny don’t know shit about boxing, that’s why he’s a dork
Ha! A classic PBF comment, I respect the fact that he’s brutally honest.
