Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. and Sergio Martinez participated in a photo shoot in New York today for their September 15 showdown and looking at the above picture got me wondering. Can Chavez beat Martinez?

Before the fight was ever announced, with out hesitation I will tell you that Martinez would kick Chavez’s butt any day. But I have to admit, Chavez Jr has improved a lot. Of course with the help of his hall of fame trainer Freddie Roach. Chavez Jr. looked unstoppable in his most recent knockout victory against Andy Lee.

On the other hand, Martinez, 37-year-old, has fought some great names and has taken significant damage. By looking at the pictures, Chavez looks huge. Chavez Jr. is only 26-years-old, in his prime and being a huge middleweight is a big advantage against the smaller Martinez.

With Jose Sulaiman predicting Chavez Jr to win over Martinez, Sulaiman gave his prediction on ‘Leave It In The Ring’ radio show, not that I think he is right but because he is liable as being corrupted, I think Chavez will have another advantage.

Right now the odds on the Wynn sports book have Martinez (49-2-2, 28 KO) favored at -170, and Chavez (46-0-1, 32 KO) at +150 on the book. Those are closer odds than some might have expected, nevertheless it is going to be a great scrap and I am going to stick with my prediction for Martinez to win. Will soon find out if the old saying is true, “the bigger you are the harder you fall.”

What is your Prediction?

  1. Martinez will not win Chavez punches will hart Martinez Martinez has never faced anyone like Chavez Martinez is good fighter but not that good Chavez punches will put him down

  2. I look tiny next to Vitaly Klitchko but keep in mind that all the experts know I’d give him a guaranteed hellacious a*s whupping.

  3. Leonard looked “tiny” next to Hearns, Duran looked “tiny” next to Moore. Pac looked “tiny” next to Margarito, etc, etc. Just to name a few.

  4. If half the fighters that Chavez has faced had any real power, his record would say something else. Even less than elite fighters land many punches on Chavez. I’ve always said Zbik beat him. Look at the stats.
Anyway, Martinez will let him know who’s the boss from the get go. Chavez said he won the title in the ring. Sure…but Martinez beat Pavlik, who beat Taylor, who beat Hopkins, and didn’t lose his title in the ring. To me it’s simple. Martinez is the real champ and will prove it once and for all on Sept 15.

  5. Martinez all the way, even with the improvements Chavez has made he still gets hit too much and with the sharp accuracy of Martinez it will hurt unlike the shots he took from Lee. Speed and accuracy will carry Martinez to victory.

  6. If Martinez wins, is he now #1 pound for pound fighter?
If Chavez wins does he crack the top 10?

  7. Ok, Edgar I agree with you 100%. The Chavez team wait until he was ready. Hopefully, Martinez would come in a great condition and give us a good fight!! If he wins he should be consider one the best pound per pound!!!
