We’re a few days away from Saturday when undefeated WBC middleweight champion and son of the legend, Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (46-0-1, 32 KOs) and two-division world champion and pound for pound king, Sergio Martinez (49-2-2, 28 KOs), collide at Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas.
I have to admit, those 24/7 HBO episodes really hype the fight. I have never seen Martinez trash talk about anyone before and Chavez is worse. One thing that did disappoint me was in the second episode where Chavez flaked on Freddie Roach. I wasn’t surprised Chavez was being lazy and not wanting to train but who does he think he is wasting Freddie Roach time? I wonder what Manny Pacquiao thinks about that.
According to Keith Kizer, executive director of the Nevada State Athletic Commission, 26 year-old Chavez will earn $3 million while 37 year-old Martinez takes $1.4 million. This does not include any additional revenue or “upside” from pay per view purchases. While it’s hard to understand how Chavez Jr is worth so much is beyond me. Saul ‘Canelo” Alvarez is receiving $2 Million while Josesito Lopez is getting peanuts, $212,500. This argument will be saved for another day.
Today both Chavez and Martinez arrive in Las Vegas and the trash talking continues.
“I am going to give boxing the respect it deserves. I am going to knock him out and make it look easy,” Martinez said. “With everything that has been said, yes, it became personal and to be honest, that’s a shame, but it’s a good sporting challenge and it provides me with extra motivation. The WBC green belt is coming back home to me.”
This is definitely a fight we all have been waiting for and I just hope Martinez gets a fair shake. I have a feeling that if the fight goes the distance the judges will give it to Julio Cesar Chavez Jr regardless of Martinez’s performance. WBC president, Jose Sulaiman, has been quoted before saying he believes Chavez will beat Martinez and rumor is Sulaiman has placed a bet on the WBC middleweight champ Julio Cesar Chavez to win. Don’t say it’s not possible; just remember what happened to Manny Pacquiao against Tim Bradley.
Also on the same night Marcos Maidana (31-3, 28 KOs) will face Jesus Soto-Karass (26-7-3, 17 KOs) in a bout that is sure to be an all action slug fest.
Attitude in boxing is everything!!!! Working out whenever you feel like it doesn’t look for Chavez! Dude is living off his name! Where would he be without roach? Treats everyone like they should now down to him! What has he done in boxing? Andy lee? Come on. I have never wanted someone to get knockout as badly as Chavez! And to be honest because of Chavez laziness, and how hard it was for Martinez to even get a shot, I’ll be surprised if Chavez makes it past the 7th!!!
I am in agreement with the article the Martinez-Chavez fight is going to be a good one and if it goes the distance although Martinez wins I honestly believe the judges will give it to Chavez.. I hope not and I hope the better fighter walks away the winner. I am going with Martinez. May the better man win!!
What a great night for Las Vegas & boxing. This weekend could be the official start of the Pac-Mayweather type hype for Alvarez-Chavez. I can’t remember when there was 2 big fights in the same city on the same night. And hearing that Chavez-Martinez sold out, and that Alvarez-Lopez was a near sellout, all the “boxing’s dead” crowd will have to wait a little longer for it to go away.
