This past Friday night, Marco Antonio Rubio scored a TKO over the previously undefeated young prospect David Lemieux in seven rounds in a title eliminator. Lemieux dominated the first five rounds with ease. Landing several shots and at times wobbling the 50-5-1 44KOs veteran but Rubio stood his ground.
It was all part of a plan to play possum until the 22 year-old Lemieux got tired. By the seventh round, Rubio unleashed his attack by landing several clean shots that sent Lemieux to the canvas. The Montreal fighter beat the count but it was just too brutal to see Lemieux get hit with a barrage of punches that awaited him forcing his trainer Russ Anber to step in waiving the white towel in a sign of surrender.
“My plan, yes I know it looks nerve wrecking for my team and for everybody but for my trainer and I, this was my plan. We knew he was a hard puncher, we knew he was coming out aggressive, we practiced our resistance, we practiced our stamina, our defense. I think I’ve developed a reputation in my last few fights that I don’t start till the fourth, fifth or sixth rounds. That’s been my experience from my losses to become a little bit more patient. I prepared for twelve rounds. You can lose three rounds in a fight but from then on you have to take them and win them.”
Rubio has earned his ticket to fight the winner of the June 4 fight between champion Sebastian Zbik and Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.
“I’m prepared for Sergio Martinez, Chavez Junior, anybody, I’m ready to fight the best and I will be champion. I think I demonstrated myself and proved myself and I will be champion,” stated Rubio after the fight.
It was definitely nerve breaking to see Rubio get a beat down in the early rounds but he stood by his game plan and won.
What’s your opinion on Marco Antonio Rubio?
Well if he does fight Chavez Jr. or Zbik at least it will be a credible first title defense for either one and a winnable fight for Rubio as he showed in the Lemieux fight he isn’t a stepping stone he’s a smart and capable fighter.
