Romulo Quirarte, head trainer and tactician for the careers of such remarkable world champions as Raul “Jibaro” Perez, Juan Jose “Dinamita” Estrada and the legend himself, Julio Cesar Chavez Sr., among others, now is in charge of preparing the interim WBC lightweight champion Antonio DeMarco (23-1-1, 17KO) for his champion clash against the full-fledged WBC champ Edwin Valero of Venezuela on February 6th in Monterrey, MX.
After guiding the southpaw DeMarco of Tijuana, MX, by way of Los Mochis, to the interim world title last October with a win over Jose Alfaro, Quirarte feels that this is the right moment for DeMarco to face his biggest test yet.
“This is definitely the right time, I wish the fight was sooner. When the fights end as comfortable as the last one, where Tony did not get hurt, then it is easy to take a quick fight but unfortunately that is not the case because the fights are bigger now,” Quirarte stated.
His son, Bobby Quirarte, who at the same time assisting his father in DeMarco’s camp is renown as a quality trainer in his own right which can be seen with his work with the current super feather WBC champ Humberto “Zorrita” Soto, added “the fight came at the most opportune time. A lot of people are afraid for us because of Valero’s record but we are not scared. We have a lot of confidence in Tony and we believe this is the right moment for us to face Valero.”
Mr. Quirarte also specified that he does not believe the fact that Valero is a southpaw will bother his pupil.
“It isn’t an advantage or a disadvantage. We are accustomed to working with southpaws and for Tony, it isn’t anything new. Fortunately he hits hard and for me, I don’t see it as a problem,” Quirarte declared.
“Tony is used to fighting southpaws. Practically his whole amateur career, he fought southpaws and sparred southpaws so it won’t be anything new,” Bobby Quirarte added. “I think he is more accustomed to fighting southpaws than orthodox fighters.”
Even though that tactics that are being practiced in the gym can not be revealed, Bobby Quirarte did imply towards what would be one of the biggest facets of their strategy for a DeMarco victory.
“For him to make the decision to be himself inside the ring. I can’t talk about our specific strategies but more than anything, he must make the decision as far as the fight and always take the initiative.”
