Daniel Ponce de Leon and Robert Guerrero received there green and gold belts earlier this week in Mexico City. Roberto Guerrero won the welterweight WBC belt against Selcuk Aydin on July 28 in San Jose, California.
Word in the streets is that Robert Guerrero might make his first defense against Timothy Bradley on December 15, likely in Miami or early next year.
Cameron Dunkin, Bradley’s manager, told ESPN that their side is ready to make the fight.
“We’re fine, we accepted it. We’re waiting on [Top Rank],” Dunkin said. “We haven’t gone through all the numbers, but they asked us if we would accept the fight and we said yes. We’re fine with Guerrero as the opponent. Now it’s a matter of getting the deal done.”
Team Guerrero also wants the fight co-manager Luis DeCubas Jr. told Dan Rafael on Monday. “It’s the best fight for the fans, and the winner of the fight emerges as top contender for Floyd Mayweather or Manny Pacquiao. If Robert beats a fighter the caliber of a Timothy Bradley, there’s nobody who can say Robert isn’t a top-10 pound-for-pound guy or can’t be there to fight Mayweather or Pacquiao. This is the fight Robert wants.”
One of the reasons I remain skeptical that Bradley-Guerrero will come off is because Bob Arum, Top Rank, promotes Bradley while Guerrero is with Golden Boy and we all know they don’t get along.
