Maidana & Guerrero

For the past couple of weeks, Robert Guerrero’s publicist has been sending out press releases basically suggesting Floyd Mayweather Jr. to fight Robert Guerrero. I did not publish any of those releases because I personally don’t see any interest in that fight.

In mid August Guerrero had surgery to repair the partially torn rotator cuff in his left shoulder which forced him to pull out of a much-anticipated fight against junior welterweight titlist Marcos Maidana scheduled for Aug. 27 at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, Calif., near Guerrero’s hometown of Gilroy.

After his successful two hour surgery, Guerrero was forced to take a four month leave to allow his shoulder to fully heal. In my opinion, instead of calling out the number one fighter in the world, he should take care of his unfinished business and fight Maidana.

Six out of his last 8 fights were only 10 rounders. I just think he needs to build his resume first before he calls out Mayweather.

Does Guerrero deserve to fight Mayweather next?

  1. I like Robert Guerrero he’s a talented fighter, he fights with a smart aggression. That being said I got to agree with this article, he’s simply not ready for a fight with Mayweather and at this time I think Robert needs to get his fight back on with Maidana or another big name at 140 or even 147 if he dazzles us there and fights a more polished defensive fighter and impresses there than maybe I’d be more inclined to hear him out. @ Donald, good points about a potential career threatening injury it does makes one wonder. Then again who around the Welterweight division isn’t trying to call out Floyd or Manny at this time? They are Boxing’s cash cows and at this point there is no shame in a fighter losing to one of them and if the upset happens to occur that’s instant Superstar status.

  2. Got to agree with jamie. The fight game is tainted with greedy promoters and fighters like Floyd Mayweather jr.. Its a shame cuz they’re killing boxing, boxing isnt boxing anymore. Its become a reality show with all the other sellout corperations. Money grubs and fame seekers have infulltrated boxing and it will never be the same. These are not like the times when men were men and the good fights were made to happen.

  3. Thats what wrong with this sport just because your not a big name you don’t get fight the best fighters ….I think that every fighter should get a chance to fight every fighter …just like Sergio Martinez …now that is a good fighter and he doesn’t get a shot at big fights …you know why cause there is politics involved which is bull ..there fighters that can beat mayweather but will never get a chance cause there is no money involved …I think that’s what this sport needs is give the no names a chance to make a name for there selfs and stop making big paydays for the promoters and everyone else …just fight that’s all …that’s what all fans want to see is good fighters get there chance …and stop seeing all the same names in the fighting ring …that’s why the UFC is killing it …everyone gets a shot …win or lose …a fair shake is a fair shake ….

  4. Guerrero is a fighter I’d never want to miss seeing in action. But a fight with Mayweather ? Not only would it not be a very good sell, it would be one real bad evening for Robert. Calling out Mayweather makes one wonder if there is worry in the camp about something, perhaps career threatening injury concerns ? And that a fight with Mayweather could secure a great payday. A win over Maidana would be the obvious best route to take, so why call out Floyd ? Doesn’t add up right…
