Robert Guerrero (29-1-1, 18 KOs) moved up two weight divisions (from 126-pound to 145 pounds) to claim the vacant WBC interim welterweight title by unanimous decision against previously unbeaten Selcuk ‘Mini Tyson’ Aydin (23-1, 17 KOs) on Saturday night at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, California.
“He was strong. Very strong I hit him with some great shots and he just kept coming,” said Guerrero after the fight. “”I felt great at welterweight,” Guerrero said. “I wanted to fight the best and that’s why I fought Selcuk. No one in the division wanted to fight him. He’s been avoided. I came in and took care of business. I believe in my talents and I boxed and used my skills tonight.”
When asked who Guerrero would like to fight next:
“I’m looking for the best fights,” Guerrero said. “It’s just about getting these guys in the ring. I’m the mandatory to Floyd Mayweather Jr. now. Floyd, if you want your belt, here it is. Come and get it. Let’s make it happen.”
Mayweather, who gets out of jail, next month, holds the full WBC welterweight title. Guerrero is now the mandatory challenger although it’s uncertain who Mayweather will fight next.
In the co-main event, Shawn Porter (20-0, 14 KOs) beat Alfonso Gomez (23-6-2, 12 KOs) of Mexico in a unanimous decision for the vacant NABO Welterweight title. Scores for the bout were 98-92, 97-93, and a too close 96-94.
Porter was aggressive from the start, going right after Gomez with power punches from both hands, as Gomez tried to use his jab to keep Porter off of him and establish some distance. For his efforts, Porter suffered a cut over his right eye courtesy of an accidental headbutt. Nevertheless, Porter’s aggression won the fight.
