Champ passes away at 67
The boxing world lost another champion when Leon Spinks passed away on February 5 at age 67 after valiantly fighting a longtime battle against cancer. He had suffered other health issues for the past few years and was then diagnosed with prostate cancer.
He is best known for beating Muhammad Ali in one of boxing’s biggest upsets; Spinks had had only eight pro fights before taking the title away from Ali. Their 1978 bout crowned Spinks the undisputed heavyweight championship of the world.
But the St. Louis boxer was also an Olympian and gold medalist, a proud Marine, a family man and a fan favorite through the years.
With his wide grin and life of the party personality, Leon endeared himself to anyone who crossed his path. His professional boxing record stands at 26 wins, 17 losses and 3 draws. He retired from the ring in 1995 but was still a popular fixture in boxing circles.
Leon and his wife Brenda were always a welcome sight at many of the gatherings through the years. The Las Vegas couple and their beloved dog Sammy were great to be around and the champ will certainly be missed by all.
The Hall of Famer leaves behind a family legacy in the fight game with brother Michael Spinks, son Cory Spinks and grandson Leon Spinks III all having laced up in the ring.
Here’s a look back in photos of “Neon” Leon at various awards banquets, charity functions, his star-studded 65th birthday bash and more.
Rest in peace, champ. Another one gone too soon.
