Daniel Ponce De Leon, ex super WBO super bantamweight champion, will challenge for the WBA interim featherweight title on January 30th in Las Vegas, NV, versus the Indonesian Daud Cino Yordan on the undercard of the welterweight championship clash between Shane Mosley (WBA) and Andre Berto (WBC).
“I am ready for the fight on January 30th although I was told that it might move,” Ponce De Leon stated from his camp in Maywood, CA. “Yordan is undefeated with 25 wins an 19 by KO.”
The current WBA featherweight champion is Chris John with Yuriorkis Gamboa holding an interim title. The winner of the Ponce De Leon-Yordan will hold a second interim strap which is something that the Chihuahua native is well aware of.
“I find it strange also. They told me that my fight is for the interim title and if I beat Yordan and Chris John moves up to 130 lbs., then I would fight Gamboa for the title,” Ponde De Leon stated. “I want to prove that I belong with the best and that I am not afraid of anyone.”
Ponce De Leon moved up to the featherweight division after losing his 122 lbs. title to Juan Manuel Lopez in one round, a bitter taste that has not left his mouth.
“I would love a rematch with Lopez. He is facing a tough fight in Steven Luevano, it is a tough fight for him,” Ponce De Leon said. “If he wins, our fight will be a unification fight at featherweight because I know I will win the title.”
Ponce De Leon has no preference between either the Cuban Gamboa or the Puerto Rican Lopez in fighting for the title at 126 lbs.
“Which ever of the two, it doesn’t matter, I know that I will have to face them in the featherweight division.”
This news is late. The Mosley vs Berto fight has been cancelled already because Berto backout. Berto is terribly affected by what happened in Haiti. There are deaths, injureds, and damaged properties in the Berto Family in Haiti.
