Las Vegas’ first world title fight of 2011 will feature world bantamweight champion Fernando “Cochulito” Montiel defending his title against two-division world champion Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire in the latest chapter of the storied México-Philippines rivalry on February 19, at Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino.

Fernando Montiel and Nonito Donaire were at the Millennium Biltmore Hotel in downtown Los Angeles Tuesday wrapping up a two-day press tour announcing their upcoming fight. After meeting face-to-face Monday in Las Vegas, the fighters remained respectful. Donaire promised fireworks and said both he and Montiel will give it all. Montiel vowed that the fight is going to be a war and a sensational fight.

No doubt this will be a sensational fight but how in the world is Donaire favorite to win over Moniel by a large merged? The MGM Resorts Sports Books opening line has Donaire the betting favorite. Donaire is -220 over Montiel who is +180.

“Only advice I can give you is to run to the nearest sportsbooks and bet all your money on me,” said Montiel. “I don’t worry about the odds. This is the kind of fight I was looking for. This is what motivates me.”

Donaire (25-1, 17 KOs), a native of General Santos City, Philippines, now living in the Bay Area of San Leandro, Calif., is a consensus top-10 pound for pound fighter. He enters this fight riding a nine-year, 24-bout winning streak, which includes an IBF/IBO flyweight title knockout victory of defending champion Vic Darchinyan, and a fourth-round blasting of former WBA bantamweight champion Wladimir Sidorenko in his last fight on December 4.Nine of Donaire’s last 10 victories have come by way of knockout.

Montiel (43-2-2, 33 KOs), of Los Mochis, Sinaloa, México, is only the fourth Méxican fighter to win world titles in three different weight divisions, joining Hall of Famer-elect Julio César Chávez and future Hall of Fame inductees Erik Morales and Marco Antonio Barrera. Undefeated since 2006, eight of Montiel’s last ten victories (eight were world title fights) have been by stoppage.

I don’t know about you but the odds seem one-sided and personally I think Montiel is going to take it and is not going 12 full rounds.

What’s your opinion?

  1. the fight on feb 19 will tell who is the best between the two…however i believe that this is the first knockout defeat of monteil carrier vs donaire..Donaire is faster both counter and attacking accompanied with powerful punch. He knows how to use the ring. There will be an early knock down or even knockout on this fight. Montiel is a puncher but i just pretty sure if he can catch donaire. Donaire is a dancing warrior. Montiel dont have any chances of winning if it last till 12 round because donaire gives mostly volume of clear shots. Donaire will win unanimous decission.

  2. ariel zabala, if you put $100 down in Vegas, you will win $180 PLUS your $100 back!!

    Hope this helps.

This is going to be one hell of a fight, I can’t wait. I might even make the trip to go see it live!!

    Go Montiel!

Hey Edgar, whats up with some tix!!! hahaha

  3. I agree with jonny, Montiel will win, but I think is going to be a very close fight.

I have a question to anyone out there I like to bet but I don’t understand the casinos numbers that they give to fighters(+180 montiel,-220 nonito)what that means in real money? let’s say I want to bet $100 to montiel how much am I goig to make if he wins.

  4. If I was a gambling man I’d listen to Montiel but I don’t bet. I think so as well Montiel will win. I think TKO by round 9. Donaire is talented and all but to me a lil over-hyped though. He is no where near as experienced as Montiel and speed and power (maybe Donaire has a slight edge on speed and Montiel has the slight edge on power.) are pretty even so that experience of Montiel is gonna be the key. I can’t wait for this one.
