By Ruben Anguiano: 36 days before the WBO welterweight champion Paul Williams steps in the ring against future Hall of Famer Ronald Wright in a light middleweight division bout taking place at the Mandalay Bay Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada on April 11th 2009.
Coming off an impressive victory over Verno Phillips, Williams believes he has nothing to prove in the welterweight division anymore after defeating  ex-welterweight  champions Antonio Margarito and Carlos Quintana. Williams must now prove he belongs in the light middleweight division. A win over “Winky” Wright will give Williams the respect indeed, but “The Punisher” will need more than his reach and height to his advantage, he must come with a perfect game plan to surpass Wright’s brilliant defense not to mention Wright’s powerful jab which has been the key factor in all his fights.
Winky Wright does have two victories over the current WBA champion Sugar Shane Mosley, but that will not be enough to win against the younger, faster, and taller opponent. This will not be a walk in the park. Watching Williams’ recent fights, I don’t see Winky Wright being able to stop Williams’ powerful left hook, which has already knocked out two light middleweight fighters, Andy Kolle and most recently Verno Phillips.
I predict the fight going to the scorecards in Paul Williams’ favor.
The co-main event will feature the upcoming undefeated heavyweight prospect Chris “The Punisher” Arreola (26-0, 23 KO’s) who will be facing Jameel “Big Time” McCline (39-9-3, KO’s 23).
Arreola’s last bout was not an easy win, being knockdown in the early second round against Travis Walker. Both undefeated fighters had their struggles but at the end Arreola defeated Walker with a powerful left hook in the third round that forced the referee to waive it off. I do not see the fight going the distance. Chris Arreola will win via TKO.
