In a rematch of their controversial draw in February, Omar Nino (29-3-2, 11 KOs) dethroned WBC light flyweight champion Rodel Mayol (26-5-2, 20 KOs) by unanimous decision on Saturday night outdoors at the Plaza De Toros Del Recinto Expositor in San Juan del Rio, Queretaro, Mexico. The bout was very close and plagued by headbutts, with Nino getting the worst of it, suffering bad cuts over both eyes. The bout was stopped several times for Nino to be examined by the ring doctor. Mayol jumped out to an early lead, but Nino was stronger down the stretch. Scores were 115-112, 117-109, 115-111.
This is Nino’s second reign as WBC 108lb champion, having relinquished the belt in 2006 after failing a post fight drug test in Las Vegas.
Niño gave up to many of the early rounds. I’m glad he came from behind to win the fight ans the title. I want to see him fight Edgar Sosa next.
