Off with his head

HayeThe Men’s Health website just release a picture of the British boxer David Haye holding Vitali’s brother Wladimir Klitschko’s severed head. It’s gory. It’s deliberately provocative. And like most boxing trash-talk, it’s also (I think) quite funny. But when Haye’s team tossed a copy of the issue at Vitali in a German restaurant, he reportedly went beserk, grabbing Haye by the collar and vowing brutal revenge.

David Haye has enraged the Ukrainian heavyweight Vitali Klitschko so much that he has agreed to fight Haye in June, probably for a world title.

The Ukrainian was later reported to have said: “It is difficult to describe my feelings. There is David Haye on the photo laughing with the head of my brother… he overstepped the mark. He must pay for this photo… I will enter the ring with a cold heart.”

Between them, the Klitschko brothers hold three of the four available world heavyweight titles. Haye wants them all, and has been agitating for a fight with either brother for the last 12 months, despite the fact that they are champions of long-standing, whereas Haye has fought only one proper bout at heavyweight since becoming the undisputed cruiserweight champion in March this year.

This was the key to riling one of the Klitschkos into fighting him for a title.

As Haye’s publicist said to me yesterday, “Men’s Health could be the first magazine to get a heavyweight title fight going!” Photo by Dan Jones

  1. Interesting, I did miss that match, but I still think there is no one out there that can really hurt the brothers, not even Areola, he showed us heart in his last fight a few weeks back by beating his opponent after being down, but he also showed us he doesn’t have a great chin, something Wladimir would really explode on.

  2. TJ,
Did you watch the Haye/Maccarinelli fight in March of this year on Showtime? If not, he is a smallish heavy with a suspect chin but big power and some decent speed. I think the Klits jab will be tough to handle and if and when Klits lands, Haye could be in big trouble. It is a better fight then a lot out there but probably not a super bout. I think Haye would do better against Wlad then Vit.

  3. I’ve never seen him box, does he have a chance? Vitali looked very good in his last fight for a guy who has had many injuries and was retired for a few years, he is still sharp, I’m not familiar with David Haye so does anyone know if this guy is a worthy opponent to any of the brothers??
