Nothing but Respect for Sergio Martinez

I have met Sergio Martinez in person and he’s the most polite and down to earth person I have ever met but recently Martinez has had enough and held a press conference in Argentina to set the record straight with the WBC President Jose Sulaiman and Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.

Martinez stated that he never agreed to step aside and allow Chavez Jr. to take on Marco Antonio Rubio on February 14. Considering earlier this month at the WBC’s 49th Annual Convention, Jose Sulaiman announced that Martinez had officially been slotted as Chavez’s immediate mandatory opponent.

Top Rank officially announced the Chavez-Rubio fight with out filing a written petition with the WBC. Sulaiman went on record saying, “the WBC therefore does not endorse and disapproves any public announcement or ticket sales suggesting that the WBC has sanctioned the fight or using the WBC name or trademarks until there is full compliance with the WBC Rules and Regulations.”

Shortly after the announcement, reports surfaced that Julio Cesar Chavez Jr got the approval from Sulaiman.

Though it’s unclear who to believe, Martinez announced he will no longer represent the WBC as their diamond belt holder until they honor their order for a bout between him and Julio Cesar Chavez, whom he called a coward.

“Chavez (Sr) and his son are cowards and you can quote me on that,” stated Martinez. “When you’re the champion, you fight the best. The way he’s handling his son is so against what he stands for.”

Martinez also said he was mistreated by HBO and is leaving the network. In December 2010, Sergio Martinez was supposed to take on Sebastian Zbik but was canceled after HBO refused to broadcast Martinez vs Zbik due to a supposed lack of public interest. HBO, however, was interested in purchasing the rights to broadcast a fight between Martinez and Ukrainian WBO junior middleweight king Sergei Dzinziruk. As a result, Martinez signed to face Dzinziruk, relinquishing his title.

Martinez just can’t get a break, he’s been a guy who has gone after the best and biggest names in the game and they still show no love. I am glad Martinez is fighting back and not letting the people step all over him. It’s to bad we can’t say that about the other so called champions.

  1. I think Sergio Martinez is one of the best fighters I’ve seen in a long time …the reason I say this is because he is a class act …he doesn’t duck anyone he really don’t talk trash only when he forced…I think he will kill Chavez and Canelo …and he even give mayweather a run for his money …it’s a shame that the boxing world doesn’t treat him with respect …to honest I rather watch him fight than mayweather again or pacman …I get so tired of hearing about those guys already ….Sergio is more entertaining to watch than alot of other fighters fighting on hbo or show time …just my opinion …but I watch alot of boxing and I know what I like to watch and Sergio Martinez I one fighter I like to watch …hope he gets better luck in 2012

  2. Martinez is to me the best out there. he is a real Champion and i agree with everything he said .
    Go Sergio !!!

  3. This is why I’ve always admired and respected Martinez he’s a class act I often read what he does outside of the ring and I couldn’t think of a better man to represent the sport. He’s a real champion and he doesn’t need that diamond belt for us to know that he’s top dog in the MW division. With all the work this man does in and out of the ring is what makes him my favorite active boxer today. Good things eventually come to good people and I’m sure that Martinez will get all he deserves in life. I will definitely watch him when he’s on Showtime I think he may be more appreciated there. No balls Chavez is no champion he’s just an overprotected coward, kick his ass Rubio!
