Former multi-division world champion Sugar Shane Mosley (46-6-1, 39 KOs) and “Contender: Season One” winner and former WBC champ Sergio Mora (22-1-2, 6 KOs) boxed to an ugly twelve round draw on Saturday night at the STAPLES Center in Los Angeles. Not much action in the first half of the in the bout as the reluctant Mora refused to engage in any exchanges as the 39-year-old Mosley stalked him around the ring. The fight was a bit more competitive after Mora slowed down and stood his ground more in the later rounds. Scores were 115-113 Mora, 116-112 Mosley, 114-114.

FIGHT QUOTES

Sugar Shane Mosley

“We both fought hard. It was a good fight so it was a good decision.

“He is not a good puncher so we had to box more.

“This was a different fight because he had to come down in weight and I had to go up.

“It would have been different if I was fighting someone my height and weight.

“Mora moved, ran away, rested and held. There were lots of head butts and that effected me.

“He was moving too much so it was hard for me to get my shots in.

“I still want to fight someone more my weight and height like Cotto.”

Sergio “The Latin Snake” Mora

“I came to win and I wanted to win, but my respect for Shane Mosley got in the way.

“I got hard headed and should have listened to my corner. They were telling me it was close and I thought I was winning the fight and my respect for Shane got in the way.

“He threw really good punches. He hit me with some hard shots.

“Going 12 rounds with Shane Mosley says something in and of itself. Honestly, I thought I won the fight.”

In a clash for the WBC super welterweight silver title, unbeaten Saul Alvarez (34-0-1, 26 KOs) showed what all the excitment is about with a spectacular knockout of former world champion Carlos Baldomir (45-13-6, 14 KOs). A left hook dropped Baldomir face first for the count. Time was 2:58.

Saul “Canelo” Alvarez

“I told you guys I was going to come with experience. I didn’t talk very much. I just showed you.

“I came to give it my all. This is for Mexico and all of my fans.

“I was prepared for the distance. Sometimes the knockout comes when you prepare for it, and it did tonight.

“He wasn’t very fast and I used that to my advantage.

“I want to fight at welterweight and be a welterweight champion. I am going to do my best to be the best in the world.”

Carlos “Tata” Baldomir

“It is true that he hits hard. I was surprised by his power.

“I am going to go home and think about what I am going to do next.

“He is the real deal. He is oing to be a real champion.

“No one has hit me like he did. No one has knocked me down like he did. He is definitely the real deal.”

“Vicious” Victor Ortiz

“The fans either love me or they hate me, but hopefully they love me now.

“I sensed his bluff at the weigh in and I called him out on it.

“I have progressed and learned a lot since the fight with Maidana. I still want him wherever he is.

“I want a shot at a world championship. I am not dodging anyone. I am ready for anyone.

“I listened to what my coaches said and I got the victory.”

“Vicious” Vivian Harris

“He caught me with some great punches. He looked very different. He was very sharp and accurate.”

  1. @Aldo,
I agree but Canelo has 34 profesional fights. How much more ‘bringing along’ does this twenty year old need. Floyd Patterson was champion at 21. Ali at 22, Mike Tyson at 20, Wilfredo Benitez before he was even 18. My point is that Canelo has all the tools and talent to be a great champion. Lets get him in the ring with some top ten guys these next few fights and hopefully get him a title fight by 2012. I don’t want him to be another Chavez Jr and be fighting tomato cans.

  2. i think mosley was the most affected with this circus, i mean he tried to fight but mora well no comments on him, and come on jesus canelo is only 20 lets be patient or what happened with that young vargas is goin to happen to him too, he tried to eat the world and we all kno how that story ended!

  3. What can you expect from a guy who didn’t make weight for this fight ? That shows you the dedication he had towards this fight. He should never be anywhere near a PPV main event. He can fight (although ‘participate’ best describes it) on all the undercards he wants as far as I’m concerned. He is no where near the elite level that you need to be to fight Shane Mosely. By the 9th round I was flipping back and forth between the fight and NFL Network.

Canelo Alvarez didn’t impress me as much as I though he would. This kid has all the talent in the world. Although he ended up TKO’ing Baldomir, he could have taken him out much earlier. It’s not like he was putting on a boxing show either. He did just enough to win the rounds against a guy who couldn’t out a two punch combination more than twice during the whole fight. Nonethe less, congrats to him. He wants to go back to 147 lbs. That’s fine. There are good fighters at that weight class.

  4. okay seriously,Mosley DID NOT do much in the ring .After I watch the fight 3 times ,I came to the conclusion that a draw was a fair decision .
Mosley did NOT do much .I landed some power shots but only few of them .He was the aggressive fighter but hid aggressiveness was the mother of futility .He was not fast nor was he accurate .
Mosley is aging ;in fact,he is old .He doesn’t have it in him any more .
In regards to Mora ,the didn’t fight like a Mexican
but he landed some power shots as well and parried a lot of Mosely’s punches .
Neither Mosley nor Mora performed well .Both of them disrespected all boxing fans and wasted than fans money and time .
both should leave boxing for good .
I am SICK and TIRED of coward boxers who get
in the ring and start hugging each other like two faggots in a gay bar.
If a boxer gets in the ring ,he is fully obligated to bring the best of him and pleases the fans because the fans are paying ,therefore ,the fans are interested in watching a faggots .
Hugging ,holding, wait for the ref to break their amorous hug and holding .
A boxer should a warrior not bitch .
I am getting sick of boxing .

  5. Vicious ortiz was the star .Alvarez wan’t impressive because he doesn’t have power nor does he have speed ;beside, he didn’t look good before an old guy;thus, this make me doubt his performane against a tough young boxer .I think Alvarez an over rated fighter .
Both Mora and Mosley were a disgrace on boxing .Mosley needs to retire and Mora needs to quit for the sake of boxing .
Mark my words ,Ortiz is the going to be a champion in the very near future .
I am still puzzled about how Mosely defeated Margarito .

  6. Do not blame Mosley for this stinker, it was all the Ltin Fake Mora who ran all night and made a terrible fighter. Then he claims he won? What a joke!
I copied the following from another site:

How can you give Mora a draw is beyond me.
Mora continues to dissapoint and people still have the gall to defend him?
For those writers and fans still trying to defend Sergio The Garden Snake Mora, lets look at his underachieving career thus far as a prize fighter.
    1) Mora gets fame from winning a reality tv show NOT FIGHTING UP THE RANKS.
    2) He gets a gift win over Manfredo at the Staples Center, fans booed.
    3) Mora is so arrogant that he refuses a fight with then champ Jermaine Taylor if his demands are not met.
    3) He gets a gift draw over Elvin Ayala.
    4) He wins a belt against an OLD Vernon Forrest only to lose in the rematch against an OLD Vernon Forrest.
    5) Mora makes excuses in Forrest defeat and blames “weight-drain” for his loss to the late great fighter.
    6) He goes inactive for more than a year.
    7) He lands a fight with Mosley but DOES NOT make weight!!!!
    8) He arrogantly brags about how hes going to bring it to Mosley leading up to the bout.
    9) He runs all night from Mosley and makes a boring fight, watch Mora run, run Mora run, the fans boo.
    10) He gets another gift draw, then claims he respected Mosley too much to bring-it to him and thats why he didnt pressure the bout.
DOES THAT SOUND LIKE A FUTURE CHAMPION and someone that will become A BOXING IDOL?
I think not, so stop making excuses for Mora, all of you are beginning to sound like the arrogant prick himself.
    Jim Lampley sait it best:
“This is a pathetic performance in a big-opportunity fight by Sergio Mora. … If Mora’s performance was embarrassing before now, I think it was even worse.”
    My Words:
Mosley is 39 and Mora is 30, but Mora fought like the 39 year old. Sure Mosley is not what he use to be, but he still won this fight.
The draw is a joke and an obvious ploy to keep Moras name in the limelight so he can be given other fights.

  7. Main event for this card should have been Alvarez Vs Baldomir, but anyways, Mosley won this fight, it’s a shame that more got such a great opportunity on a PPV show just to put on this horrendous show, and still say he won the fight, Mosley is such a class act, but he should have said it how it was, I won the fight!, he did all he could to make it interesting, chasing, punching, trying to make it a fight, Mora totally suck.

I’m with Larry when he said, he doesn’t want to see Mora fight again, I knew he had nothing to do with Mosley, but at least try and give the people who are paying good money to see you fight a good show, instead, he “doesn’t listen to his corner” comes in with the head every time he had a chance, hugs, hugs, runs, hugs, give me a break, we don’t need this kind of boring fighters in the sport.

  8. Even though I was going for Mora, he sucked big time!!!!!Mosley won that fight…..I wasn’t gonna buy this fight cus I didn’t think it should have been on ppv….I knew it was gonna suck…but I ended up buying it just for the undercards….. At least they were exciting…….
