Back-to-Back Events October 5 & 6

The media tour continues for Sugar Shane Mosley Boxing Promotions as their back-to-back October 5 and 6 fight nights near.

Here is my special report from Round 2 on the Media Tour. In an innovative twist, the spotlight will shine on both amateurs and pros at these dual events next month. The kickoff event was held recently in North Hollywood, California and the interactive open workouts continued this past weekend at a Customer Appreciation Day at the Pomona 7-Eleven. On Saturday, I once again visited with the troops who are gearing up for this historic weekend scheduled to take place at the Finish Line Sports Grill in Pomona.

October 5 will feature top amateurs from the area; October 6 boasts a main event with Kaliesha West and Christina Ruiz and a packed undercard with Katarina De La Cruz, Blanca Raymundo, Michael Ruiz Jr., Xavier Montelongo Jr., Holly Lawson, Andrew Estrada and more.

The Mosley family is known for their “Pomona Pride. Now Shane and his sister Cerena Mosley-Prude have brought the city together through their boxing and charitable events. The October shows are planned to coincide with Breast Cancer Awareness month and proceeds will help benefit the Diamond’s Love Foundation, Susan G. Komen and more. K.O. Cancer “Boxing for the Cure” will aim for community unity at its best.

And on Saturday, this 7-Eleven was turned into a real boxing bash for the locals who got a chance to see pro fighters Shane Mosley, Kaliesha West, Katarina De La Cruz, trainers Jack Mosley, Mike Kidd, Manny Ramos and a crew from the Mosley Pomona Boxing Club including Shane Mosley Jr., Ole Arias, Drew Angelcor, Shawn Watson, Tracy Alexander, Richard Lopez, and Ivan Pandzic.

Special guests at this weekend extravaganza also included the Mayor of Pomona Elliott Rothman, model/actress Teresa Noreen, Rockstar representative Mark Fujita, and the Tecate Girls. There were free giveaways and prize raffles for the fans, who had the opportunity to get autographs, see a vintage car display, and sample Rockstar Energy Drinks and get complimentary Rockstar hats. The families also got to enjoy a mobile DJ, face painting, and a bounce house for the kids. Fighter Shawn Watson will be making his debut at the Finish Line and he showed off some of his moves off the canvas too. The lanky amateur entertained the crowd with his break dance moves on the asphalt during the meet-and-greet.

While chatting with both the fighters and the fans, I heard everyone say how much they liked the community aspect of this gathering. This media tour has allowed the fans to get to know the amateurs and pros who they will see lace up in October. The “Sugar Shane Mosley Fight Night Explosion” will offer exciting bouts,
surprise guests and special entertainment in a community setting open to all ages.

The city’s mayor is a big boxing fan and had a chance to meet female fighter (and proud new resident of Pomona) Katarina De La Cruz at Saturday’s outdoor event. “I’m really looking forward to these two events in Pomona,” Mayor Rothman told me. “I think it’s going to be a KO weekend for the city.”

De La Cruz shared in his enthusiasm for bringing this fundraising fight night to the town of Pomona. Katarina, Cerena and Shante Hall were there Saturday representing the nonprofit group, which has worked tirelessly to ensure October 5 and 6 are a KO success.

“Things are going well, right on schedule,” Cerena said with a smile. “We will have MundoFox broadcasting too. And ticket sales are moving–it will be a fun night for all. ”

And one boxer in particular has been a force in ticket sales. “Drew Angelcor has already sold 90 tickets,” Katarina mentioned. “So I gotta try and beat that number! He and his coach Manny Ramos come all the way from Barstow to train. They are truly dedicated.”

New amateur Angelcor is a switch hitter whose passion for the sport continues to grow. He and his trainer will soon be making the brand new Mosley World Boxing Gym in Barstow their home but for now, the duo both juggle full-time jobs with boxing training, renting a car to make the treks to the Pomona gym. De La Cruz is impressed with their hard work and the effort the trainer and boxer go through in preparation for October 5.

One thing that I’ve noticed while getting to know the Mosley Boxing Team is that close camaraderie and sturdy support amongst the group.

There’s a full support system between all the camps with various young boxers and their respective coaches, with no visible conflict or backstabbing behavior I have seen in the fierce competition that the sport brings forth.

Katarina nods and agrees with this assessment. While the boxers and trainers come from all over the counties, they have become a single-unit team who has grown very close while training. Soon they will be traveling up to Big Bear for the final gym time before their bouts.

De La Cruz attributes the closeness and lack of pettiness to a strong force behind the Diamond’s Love Foundation.

“We all get along so well because of Cerena Mosley,” De La Cruz tells me. “She has such a strong center with strong roots. We branch out from that support–she’s our leader!”
