More on Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.

Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.’s coming out party was last night. He has it all: a great name, great genes, great trainer, and a great promoter. That might not be all, but it definitely makes it easy to become a superstar. Finally, after a few fights with one of the greatest trainers in the world, Chavez seems to have some skills. His work ethic is apparently better (it was rumored to be quite terrible, thus why he was matched so easily for so long). Now we are looking at a world champion.

Well, he has technically earned the title. Chavez Jr. showed his heart and will to win. He is great for boxing. He hits and gets hit. He perseveres and pleases the crowd. Regardless that the rightful owner of this belt is Sergio Martinez, it is now in Chavez’s hands. He fought a competitive fight. Now it is time for Chavez to stop being babied and fight someone real, and not in his own backyard.

Who remembers the idea of when a challenger fights the champion, the challenger must take the belt? Saturday night, Zbikwhom was the champion, acknowledged that the close rounds (which should go to the champion) went to Chavez Jr. Zbikwas in Chavez Jr.’s territory and understood that he had to not just hold on to the title, but not let Jr. get anywhere close to it in the fight. Julio did get close enough to take the title into his-possession.

Zbik, whom is an incredible boxer with unbelievable accuracy, was a great big name opponent (big name within the boxing industry at least) for Chavez. Sebastian Zbik was undefeated, held the belt, and was known to not have much power. The size difference between the champion and challenger was significant. At some point, the commentators mentioned that Jr. weighed close to 180 that night. He was significantly taller than Zbik and it was obvious that Zbik’s punches, regardless of accuracy and volume, would be withstood by Chavez Jr. A dance was done by Jr. after taking a flurry of head shots fromZbik showing that the smaller man could not hurt him.

Chavez Jr., although a warrior, who seems to have some skillsto keep him competitive, be able to sell tickets and put on a fight, did show flaws. When Chavez does step in the ring with someone whom is similar in size or does pack a bigger punch, we will see a different night for Chavez. Zbik threw more and landed more, yet because of his lack of power was unable to do much damage. Chavez threw the stronger punches that did more damage. Although he through and landed less and often looked out of position and sloppy, he did enough to become champion.

It was a great night for Chavez and he did what he needed to do. Let’s hope the money is right and we see him against a Miguel Cotto or even better, Sergio Martinez.

A side note, watching this fight may very well be a good simulation of what Tomasz Adamek will look like when he takes on the larger Vitali Klitschko. Although Tomasz is a great boxer, the size difference will prove very tough for Goral. Still, a fight like this shows that a smaller man can still put on a great fight and have a good chance at winning the fight. Zbik’s shots did not hurt Chavez Jr. Adamek may have trouble hurting Klitschko. If he is busy enough and has superior defense, Adamek does have a good chance. Otherwise, between two superior boxers, size always helps.
