Yesterday it was announced that the first defense of the WBO bantamweight title is set for Fernando “KOchulito” Montiel (39-2-1,
29KO) of Los Mochis, MX, when he is scheduled to face the Puerto Rican Eric Morel on June 27th from Atlantic City, NJ.
Montiel is coming off his devastating stoppage of the Argentinean Diego Silva in Tijuana, MX, to earn his third title in as many divisions.
Montiel-Morel will be the semi main event for Kelly Pavlik to defend his WBC and WBO middleweight belts against Sergio Mora.
“KOchulito” mentioned that he is glad that he is being kept active by his promoters Zanfer Promotions and Top Rank and that he looks forward of going after Vic Darchinyan after he takes care of Morel.
Montiel believes that Darchinyan will earn the IBF version of the bantamweight title against Joseph Agbeko in his next bout in July.
“I hope Darchinyan wins the IBF belt and then we can fight to unify the belts,” Montiel stated from his home in Los Mochis.
