Today at the the weigh-ins in downtown Denver, CO at Diego’s Mexican Restaurant, it was definitely a pro-Alvarado crowd chanting “303” for the hometown favorite. However, the cheers from the Mile High city crowd did not phase the confidence of the Russian Rocky who was all smiles and flexing muscle weighing in one pound under the 140 pound weight limit.
Ruslan Provodnikov looked healthy and hydrated while Mike Alvarado’s face looked dehydrated and sunk in, coming in one pound over. Alvarado also appeared softer in the midsection than he did six months ago against Brandon Rios. He weighed in around 3:30 local time and had two hours to make the official weight for his first junior welterweight title defense. Subsequently, Alvarado did make weight and a few hours later, while I was having dinner with my family at The Old Spaghetti Factory, Alvarado was also there with his family sitting head of the table and smashing food after a tough time making weight.
Being a Colorado native, I will be the first to say I am hopeful there is a home cooking recipe and defeat of Provodnikov; however, after seeing both fighters today, an obviously malnourished Alvarado, and a charged up Provodnikov, I am a bit worried on this one. Alvarado has some big things in front of him if he can take care of business, but he is going to have his hands full Saturday night at the 1st Bank Center in Broomfield, CO. Unfortunately, the homecoming may not go as planned for the confident 303 crowd who packed the weigh-ins today and who helped sell out the Top Rank venue.
You could definitely feel the excitement at Diego’s Mexican Restaurant today during the weigh-ins. Let’s hope we get excitement tomorrow and I am reading too much into Alvarado’s appearance today. Either way, I believe we will get another fight of the year candidate on HBO.
good call. i did not bet it.
dude looks horrible, i was picking the Russian to pull off the upset here but I dont think it can be considered an upset now. Good luck to Mike he’s tough as hell I think he’s still very capable of winning this fight. The weight loss does not help his cause though.
He doesn’t look good at all. To make matters worse he Is up against a hard hitting tuff opponent. Good luck
I am worried too!
Alvarado better win in his backyard! That upclose pic of him looks scary…dang it…he looks super dehydrated! If Alvarado hydrates properly and has the energy to box and give angles he wins…sounds like a lot of ifs…
