In late breaking news, it has been reported that Miguel Cotto Sr., father of former welterweight champion Miguel Cotto, passed away minutes after falling ill and asking a liquor store owner to call an ambulance.
Miguel Cotto Sr. was traveling down highway PR 183 in Caguas, Puerto Rico, when he began to lose his breath. Cotto Sr. stopped his vehicle abruptly and asked Douglas Melendez to call an ambulance.
“He stopped and asked me to call an ambulance. I came inside the store and made the call, I was going to look for a bottle of water, but then he collapsed,” Melendez stated. “He couldn’t breath, he died in my arms.”
The police called the cause of death as a heart attack and mentioned that Cotto Sr. traveled with an oxygen machine that he needed because of severe asthma.
Melendez, 29, mentioned that he dialed 911 more than four times.
“The 911 system does not work,” Melendez said.
In his cell phone past calls folder, there was proof that Melendez dialed the number at 2:04pm, 2:14pm, 2:15pm and 2:53pm. The last call was to inform the emergency system of the passing of Cotto Sr.
It is reported that Miguel Angel and Jose Miguel made it to their father’s side along with Cotto Sr.’s current wife, Juana Vazquez.
“It is a tragedy that we weren’t able to sit down and fix things,” Evangelista Cotto, brother of Cotto Sr. and former trainer Miguel Cotto stated. The brothers had not spoken since April of last year after the former champion and Evangelista experienced a very public altercation which led to Miguel Cotto firing his uncle as his trainer.
“It is very sad, it is an incredible pain… for me, my suffering is doubled,” Evangelista stated.
