So the three-time world champion Miguel Cotto has declared in Puerto Rico that he expects to cottoretire from boxing when he turns 30 on October 29, 2010.

“Ten months will fly by, so one, maybe two more fights, and I will completely retire from boxing,” he said. “I’ve been a champion three times and I’m satisfied with what I’ve done. I’ll be very satisfied with whatever God gives me the opportunity to achieve during the ten months remaining.”

Though I think it’s too soon for the Puerto Rican to retire sometimes it is best if he stops while he is ahead.  For those who have seen the movie “American Gangster” with Denzel Washington, there’s a quote the Chinese General tells him when every thing is coming to an end.

“It’s not in my best interest to say this Frank, but quitting while you’re ahead, is not the same as quitting.”

Think about it for a minute… it makes sense right?

Miguel Cotto currently has two losses, which isn’t much, but is not the number of losses but the fashion in which you lost them.  When Cotto lost to Antonio Margarito last summer, everyone one made up excuses as to why he lost and blame it on Margarito maybe using plaster gloves cotto2since he tried to cheat for his following fight. Are you going to tell me Manny Pacquiao also use loaded gloves? Lets be honest here, who can Miguel Cotto possibly fight next that you will pay to watch? I think the only fight boxing fans will pay is for a rematch against Antonio Margarito just because there was so much controversy if Margarito did in fact use loaded gloves or not.

Ricky Hatton also has two losses and how many times have you heard people say “he should retired?”. It’s like that saying “is not what you say but how you say it.”. Same with boxing, is not how many times you lose but in the fashion you lose and Miguel Cotto got his ass handed to him twice.

  1. I hear you guys he is still young and strong and I believe he could be champion again. I would luv to see cotto vs mayweather before he retires, that would be the sweetest win to go out on.

  2. I honestly believe Cotto still has what it takes to be a champion again. He is young and still good. I think he can still give a Mayweather Jr. a lot of trouble.

  3. Cotto is too young to retire. Although he took a beating from Pacquiao, I felt that under a better trainer he could have pulled it off. Cotto take a year off, clear your mind and get yourself an experienced trainer. You still have what it takes to be a world champion! Mexico for Cotto!

  4. I think cotto is doing the right thing. I believe he has run his coures and he has had a couple of tough losses. He is a great fighter and champion and I would luv to see him have a 1 or 2 good fights before he retires. Cotto is a good addition to that list of great puertorican champions. He has the heart of a lion, a true Boricua.
