According to the Puerto Rican Daily, “El Nuevo Dia”, former WBA welterweight champion Miguel Cotto is not jumping on the bandwagon and using the investigation of Antonio Margarito’s hand wraps in his bout against Shane Mosley to minimize his loss to the “Tijuana Tornado”.

“We don’t want to taint Margarito’s win, he had a great night.  Only they know what they used, what they did or did not do, but he had a great win,” Cotto stated who was knocked out for the first time in his career in that bout which took place July 26th, 2008.

“As far s the situation that they are going thru right now, only he and his team know what the wraps had.  They know what the consequences that they are facing.”

What is important for Cotto is the fact that he is passed the loss to Margarito and now is looking forward to future challenges.

“We are doing fine.  We got over that defeat and we are focused in our next fight and looking forward to what the year has to bring us,” he stated.  “That fight has been left in the past.”

Also on the horizon for Cotto is the possible rematch with Margarito in June as well a possible rematch with Mosley who Cotto defeated last year in his third defense of the 147 lbs title.

“We are open to the big challenges, to the big fights that the fans want to see, to the fights that draw emotion, the fights that the boxing audience really wants to see,” Cotto said.

Cotto has never fought in a rematch in his professional career.  Although as an amateur he lost to Kelson Pinto and Mohammed Abdulaev, two losses that he avenged in the professional ranks.

But Cotto has no problem giving or asking for rematches.

“I have no problems with those fights.  We are open.  I know that they are good fights for me and we are in the position to do them,” he added.

Top Rank has stated that the rematch with Margarito is scheduled for June 13th.

  1. Class act indeed, this is someone who does his job really well and has no need to be talking more than he should, a lot of boxers should learn from Cotto, I’ve always been a fan and I’m looking forward to see him in action in a few weeks.
I am a fan of Margarito and I will back him up until this whole issue is cleared, there is a lot of people who are jumping ship with out completely knowing the full story, I wish the commission would release the info they have as soon as possible so the fans can find out exactly what went on.

We all know that they found something, only they know exacly what it is, I find it hard to believe that Marg had plaster or something similar in those gloves, but anything is possible, that is why I’m waiting for the info to come out.

Last week on Friday Night fights Teddy Atlas had a good explanation on what could have happened that night with the raps, but if at the end they found that he did had something that could harm his opponent then they should suspend him or even revoke his license and his trainer, hope this is not the case.
