Michael Katsidis’ brother found dead

The older brother of Australian lightweight star Michael Katsidis who is schedule to fight on November 27 in Las Vegas against Juan Manuel Marquez was found dead Tuesday in his Brisbane, Australia, home.

Stathi Katsidis is one of the top Thoroughbred horse jockeys in Australia, the 31, was due to ride Australian Derby winner Shoot Out in the Cox Plate on Saturday and November’s Melbourne Cup. According to multiple Australian media reports, Stathi Katsidis was found dead by his girlfriend, Melissa Jackson, who also is the mother of their 4-year-old son.

Police say there are no suspicious circumstances around the death of the multiple Group One-winning rider. The cause of death has not been determined, although he had a history of drug and alcohol problems, Katsidis had battled weight and drug problems. He served a nine-month ban after testing positive for ecstasy in 2008 and on the same year he was caught driving drunk, for which he was fined $1,000 and suspended for another six months, but had made a successful comeback.

  1. Terrible loss for the family. Really tough for a boxer to overcome. So much of their performance is mental. Hopefully he will make the right decision for himself and his family. He needs to be focused to be safe.

  2. Damn that sucks, I wouldnt blame Michael if he happens to pull out from the fight with Marquez. If he fights on then he is a strong-minded fighter losing a brother is hard. R.I.P. to his bro.
