“No Mercy” Main Event in Arizona
This weekend is a big weekend in boxing, to say the least. We’ve got the Mayweather vs. Ortiz showdown in Vegas and the Canelo Alvarez vs. Alfonso Gomez clash in L.A.
While millions of eyes will no doubt be glued to the action on the “Star Power” card, boxing fans in the Parker, Arizona area will be getting their own dose of star-studded action at the “BATTLE AT BLUEWATER II” at the BlueWater Resort and Casino Saturday, September 17.
One rising star who will be facing off in the co-main event will be Mercito “No Mercy” Gesta, a Filipino southpaw new to the Top Rank stable. This fighter from the Philippines has remained unbeaten with his 22-0-1,12 KO record. Sharing the main event status with Jose Benavidez Jr., Gesta looks to add his 23rd victory to his growing ledger.
On Saturday, Mercito will take on Colorado’s Manuel Perez (16-6-1, 4 KOs). His Denver challenger has faced the likes of Brandon Rios, Diego Magdaleno, Matt Remillard, among others and this matchup should provide fireworks in the desert.
Trained by San Diego’s well-regarded Vince Parra, Gesta has also been getting in some torrid sparring sessions while at Wild Card in Hollywood.
All that’s left now is for the 23-year-old to shine–and sizzle–in the ring as he continues to prove he’s on the straight path toward world titles.
While his name may not be a household name yet, as in Mayweather, Pacquiao, Margarito or Mosley, Team Gesta has big plans for the young slugger.
I had a chance this past summer to get to know Mercito and his camp when he was announced as one of promoter Bob Arum and Top Rank’s rising new stars. Gesta’s Top Rank debut took place at the Home Depot Center on the Brandon Rios–Urbano Antillon card. Mercito went to combat against Jorge Pimentel–with the hard-hitting Pinoy winning the war with a decisive third-round knockout over “El Tigre” Pimentel from Sonora.
Now you have a chance to meet this likable young boxer from Cebu in this video interview with “No Mercy,” which took place after his KO victory.
As Gesta continues to get his name out there–quickly gaining more fans with each and every victory–many say this is a fighter certainly on the fast track to success. For fans who haven’t yet had a chance to see the talented Filipino in the ring, you’ll have another opportunity before the year ends. The junior welterweight and his camp plan to stay busy with another bout already penciled in for November.
For fans in AZ, be sure to catch Gesta live in action Saturday night in a scheduled ten rounds. “BATTLE AT BLUEWATER II” is promoted by Top Rank and Showdown Promotions and will air on Fox Sports.
