Earlier today, future champion, junior welterweight Mauricio Herrera signed and sealed the deal for a 10 round bout on April 14 against undefeated Mike Alvarado (32-0, 23 KOs). The fight will open the HBO telecast that will feature the much-anticipated main event bout between unbeaten lightweights Brandon Rios and Yuriorkis Gamboa.
When asked about his upcoming challenge, Herrera had this to say: “Alvarado is a tough guy, he’s a rugged puncher with a solid chin. I’ve seen him fight and know what I’m up against. I plan to take control of the fight and perform like never before.”
Herrera (18-1, 7 KOs) last faced Mike Dallas, Jr. in June of 2011 in a battle that went the full distance of 10-rounds. Herrera got the victory by majority decision.
Continued Herrera, “This fight means everything and I am taking it like it is a world championship because it is designed to take me to the next level. This is going to be the fight of my life and I will prepare for it.”
Added, Herrera’s promoter Ken Thompson, “Come April 14 there will be two winners: the fans and Mauricio Herrera. We are confident Mauricio is ready for the next level.”
The Mike Alvarado vs. Mauricio Herrera bout is promoted by Top Rank in association with Thompson Boxing Promotions and will take place at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas. Tickets begin at $25.00 and go on sale tomorrow!
