With the recent failed drug tests coming to light, 2 men remain standing, both of which have been accused of in the past of using performance enhancing drugs. Victor Ortiz is left without a dance partner for a June 23rd date on Showtime. Andre Berto was recently found with banned substances in his drug test results. Last year after Ortiz’s victory over Berto, Berto tweeted, later apologizing, that Ortiz must have been using PEDs. Now Berto himself has been exposed with PEDs in his system, putting his career in jeopardy.
In another highly anticipated rematch between Lamont Peterson and Amir Khan, Peterson failed a drug test and it was brought to light, the substances were taken before their first meeting. Khan, who in speculation has been accused of using PEDs in association with Pacquaio, has now missed his big HBO date and looks towards the future.
Ortiz and Khan, both highly rated fighters, are now left looking for a meaningful fight. For both men, Maidana has been a past opponent, bringing out the best and worst in both fighters, has been brought up as a possible opponent. With the right timing, a Khan-Maidana or Ortiz-Maidana rematch would be an incredible fight.
Juan Manuel Marquez is looking for an opponent, and is a big draw that is HBO approved. Marquez would pose problems for both fighters and is available for a date in the near future. Marquez who is looking for a southpaw would put on an incredible fight with Ortiz. Although Ortiz has a different style than Manny Pacquaio, his southpaw stance would allow Marquez to further prepare himself for a possible fourth showdown with Manny.
Other great options include, Danny Garcia, Zab Judah (for Ortiz, as not many would like to see a rematch with Khan), and Jan Zaveck, who fought a good few entertaining round with Berto.
Many speculate the idea of matching Ortiz and Khan. Both have entertaining styles and the hunger to fight. Depending on the contracts, as Khan was to fight on HBO and Ortiz on Showtime, a Khan-Ortiz fight could be a great save for boxing.
As for Peterson and Berto, their futures will very much lie in the hands of the results of the investigations of their failed tests. As the details unfold, it is important to keep an open mind in regards to these fighters. Hope for the best for the future of Ortiz and Khan in regards to a big future fight. If Margarito can get relicensed, let’s hope that Berto and Peterson have the ability to seek redemption.
