In the highly anticipated match between Sergio Martinez (50-2-2, 28 KOs) and previously unbeaten WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (46-1-1, 32 KOs) Martinez toyed with the son of the legend Julio Cesar Chavez for 11 rounds. Martinez was in command from the opening bell throwing over 900 punches to 390, punishing Chavez Jr as he promise he would.
The only drama in the fight began 1:40 mins into the 12 round when Chavez landed a powerful left hook that dropped a tired Martinez. Martinez would go down one more time with seconds to end the final round. It was déjà vu from the March 17, 1990 epic fight between Julio Cesar Chavez Sr. and Meldrick Taylor but unfortunately the 26 year-old couldn’t seal the deal. Martinez ended up winning a lopsided unanimous decision to regain the middleweight title. Scores were 117-110, 
118-109, and 118-109.
It seems like anyone that was rooting for Chavez Jr. cried about Chavez deserving an immediate rematch. Here’s my personal opinion.
Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. does Not deserve a rematch.
The fight was not competitive. Martinez clearly dominated the fight. I don’t think a minute of the last round is sufficient to claim a rematch. Chavez Jr. was hopelessly over-matched and for 11 rounds Chavez fought with very little effort. It’s like Shane Mosley asking for a rematch against Floyd Mayweather for his two big right hands that turned out to be a big dud.
I will admit, Chavez does hit hard and he does have a good chin. But he has a lot more to learn and I think within time he could get better.
I will also give major props to Sergio Martinez for getting up and didn’t look to hold on instead he kept fighting even though Martinez suffered a right knee injury during the first knocked down and a broken left hand that he sustained in the fourth round. Martinez showed a great heart.
I agree, the scorecards tells you no immediate rematch is necessary. A soon to be 38 year old Martinez needs to lick his wounds (broken hand and busted up knee) and heal 100 % before getting back into the ring. ChavezJr in the meantime needs a good tune-up fight and get his confidence back. Then maaaaybe we can talk rematch.

I don’t think ChavezJr and Canelo will ever be in the same weight class at the same time enough to consider a fight. JMO
I think the rematch will be made later on, but not right away.
Have to give Chavez Jr. credit for hanging in there tough and then scoring a knockdown. But Edgar is correct, after being completely outclassed and beaten-up for 11 rounds, one last good moment isn’t deserving of a rematch. Chavez needs to forget about Martinez and just move on. But as we all know , if the money is there , the rematch will be made. (And Julio needs to stay clear of a future match-up with Canelo.)
