Marquez Wants Rematch with Juanma

Rafael Marquez is planning to have a tune up in March. Rumor is he plans to fight the WBO champion Juan Manuel Lopez once again in the summer. Marquez hasn’t fought since losing to Juanma via TKO last November. Marquez believes he could have won if the referee didn’t interfere. During the fourth round, Lopez was badly hurt after Marquez landed a serious of power punches but the referee allowed Lopez to recover as the referee called time to take a point from Juanma, giving Lopez a chance to breath.

Bob Arum already has a scheduled date of April 16, 2011 in Puerto Rico for Juanma to defend his WBO World featherweight title against former WBA super bantamweight interim champion, Panamanian Ricardo Cordoba (37-3-2), on Showtime.

To be honest, I don’t want to see a rematch between Rafael Marquez and Juan Manuel Lopez. I am more interested in seeing Juanma vs Yuriorkis Gamboa. As much as I like Marquez, I think just like Israel Vazquez, he’s done. What’s your opinion?

  1. Rafael Marquez has already lost his touch, unlike his older brother his still powerfull, anyways rafael is kinda boring to watch i rather prefer to watch juan ma against yurkis

  2. CFlores, with all due respects to your comment BUT…. “Marquez ROCKED JuanMa SEVERAL times” seems to be an OVER statement. I suggest you watch it again. Yes, good shots were landed but the ONLY time JuanMa was actually rocked was in round four and if you care to watch it again you’ll see that it was JuanMa that was on the offensive as the round ended. Check it out. After that round you’ll also see a that it was JuanMa that was doing the ROCKING and PUNISHING!! And if you remember well it was the ONLY round that given by practically ALL scorecards, including the official judges, Tarver and Showtime’s front row press judges. It’s possible were listening TOO MUCH to Bernstein and his broadcast partner’s very partial rooting for Marquez. I don’t doubt that Rafa can give JuanMa a run for his money, he can, but the result will basically be the same. I believe that this fight took A LOT more out of Rafa than what his fans are willing to consider. Next time around it will be an even stronger, smarter and more confident JuanMa facing a older, slower, shop worn Marquez.

  3. Juanma is good but to completely mark off Marquez is outrageous. If Marquez said he had an injury to his shoulder, one can only take his word. Marquez ROCKED juanma SEVERAL times. Of course juanma doesnt want anymore of him. All Latinos are VERY proud and I can see the fight happening by Marquez calling Juanma out. Besides Gamboa, I want to see juanma fight marquez again. it was awesome. a rematch with Ponce De Leon would be good also.

  4. @Edgar Yes, we SAW and KNOW what happened. Rafa has been one of my favorites for years and it would be sad to see his career end with a string of high profiled loses. BUT.. due to his reputation and market value I doubt that retirement is in sight, even if he were to lose a return fight, a fight that I DON’T believe will happen. First of all, Rafa’s clock is ticking, he isn’t getting any younger, he’s been in many wars and he’s not going to get any better, while JuanMa is getting stronger. Marquez took a lot of punishment his last time out and we only imagine how much Lopez actually took out of him.

  5. I think if Marquez wants a rematch , it’s because he thinks he could win…. Marquez is a warrior ,, I think he could pull the trigger in this one……..

  6. @EZ E the Measuring stick lol good one.. You seen what happen, after the fight Marquez blame his shoulder, whats next his legs. I like Marquez to much to see him get hurt again. Maybe 1-2 fights more and thats it.

  7. Jonny Boy, I agree that Lopez has a different agenda than facing Rafa again. Although I believe that Marquez can still hold his own very well against most of the elites of the division but… not for too much longer. If he continues to fight he will eventually find himself being used as thee ‘measuring stick’ that divides “the men from the boys” or “the contenders from the pretenders”.

  8. I doubt he would land the fight again, he might have a chance for a big fight if he chases Gamboa instead hope he has more sense and doesn’t, already been in too many wars. I do have to agree with the article he’s done but not so much as Vasquez is. He just doesnt belong with the elite anymore but i’m sure he maybe has a couple more fights as a gate keeper to the up and comers of the division or bantams moving up and want a good test to see if they belong.
