It is rumored that former three time welterweight champion Antonio Margarito is currently training and will be on the under card of the Manny Pacquiao-Joshua Clottey super fight scheduled for March 13th in Dallas, TX.

The “Tijuana Tornado” was suspended for a year by the California State Athletic Comission after using illegal hand wraps in his bout against Shane Mosley in January of last year in Los Angeles, CA.

Margarito was stopped in nine rounds and lost his license in all of the United States since the suspension of one state is honored by the rest of them according to the Association of Boxing Comissions. He can re-apply on February 10th.

Top Rank, Margarito’s promoter, wishes to license him by then so that he can take part of the Pacquaio-Clottey undercard which will take place in the majestic Cowboys Stadium where there is a large population of Mexican and Mexican-Amercian fight fans.

“Our intention is for him to fight on that fight card,” Ricardo Jimenez, Public Relations for Top Rank, affirmed.

Francisco Capetillo, co-manager of Margarito, was more reserved in his comments.

“Margarito is still suspended so I can not confirm any news,” Espinoza told Puerto Rican newspaper Nuevo Dia. “We can’t do anything until we submit our application for reinstatement to the comission. If it is accepted, then we would move forward.”

Espinoza did mention that Margarito has a scheduled date to appear before the comission and solicit his license.

“Arbitration is in February and we will face the comission,” Espinoza continued. “It is in their hands whether they want to give him the license or not. We feel confident.”

Espinoza also admitted that they have been offered opportunities to fight outside the United States but they decided against it so that the wouldn’t jeopardize their date with the comission.

“We were offered $700,000 to fight in Cancun but we did not accept,” Espinoza added. “I told Tony that it would be like slapping the comission in the face.”

Despite the suspension, the former world champion has kept training.

“This year he has been training like a mad man,” Espinoza explained. “He is in great condition. He is walking around at 160 lbs.”

I saw him a few days ago at the TJ border and even though he was in his car he did looked on shaped, 160 pounds something sounds about right.

It’s going to be a long road, but a few people were approaching him to say hi and talk so it looks like he still has some fans, I think a lot of people will be tuning in , America loves controversy , we’ll see what happens.

  2. I wish that Margarito is out of business for good
