This past week, Antonio Margarito finished his one-year ban handed down to him by the California State Athletic Commission for attempting to use illegal hand wraps in his bout against Shane Mosley last year. As of now, Margarito has the right to apply for a boxing license in the state of his choosing.
Margarito reached the height of his popularity when he stopped Miguel Cotto of Puerto Rico via TKO in July of 2008 in Las Vegas, soon there after he signed to fight Shane Mosley in a super star fight in Los Angeles, CA.
After a pair of knuckle pads were confiscated prior to his bout with Mosley, it was later discovered that the pads had a “plaster of paris” like substance on them. Margarito as well as his trainer, Javier Capetillo, were suspended for one by the CSAC.
Margarito lost by TKO his bout against Mosley.
The suspension took place during a hearing held on February 11th, 2009.
Although Margarito held his innocence in the matter, the suspension was held and now the Tijuana native hopes to come back on either March 13th on the Pacquiao-Clottey under card or in Mexico on May 8th on his own Latin Fury PPV.
I disagree allowing Margo to fight again. He should be made to confess in what other previous fights of his did he use the plaster on his hands.
Wow EZ E…GOOD FOR YOU
Ahhh… I might be wrong. Let’s see…. If a man is convicted of a certain SERIOUS crime and it sent to prison, he does a MINIMUM of his sentence before he goes up for consideration before a parole board, who in turn decides if he should be released and enter society. Legally he can be set free but in many cases the board may decide that the offender/s deserve to remain incarcerated because they feel that the crime commited calls for it. NOT necessarily because the board feel that the offender continues to be a threat, but because they feel that the crime merits more prison time. It’s reality.
Now, by boxing’s standards Margo & team commited a SERIOUS offense, no doubt, a crime deemed dispicable by MOST ALL fighters, fans and sportsmen alke. He has completed with the MINIMUM time of his license revocation and now his case must be presented before a board to decide if he should be allowed to enter a ring.
So… no, I don’t believe I’m wrong in my personal opinion on this very delicate matter.
Bacially it’s come down to: “DON’T DO THE CRIME IF YOU CAN’T DO THE TIME” or whatever.
And yes, I agree that Margo has a family to take care of WITH HIS FINANCES, although I don’t believe he’ll ever be will be filing for food stamps, not with all the money he’s already made. Not unless he blows it foolishly, as foolishly as the did by “loading up’. AND… at the same time his possible past victims and potential victims (like Mosey) also had/have their own families to take care of WITH THEIR FINANCES AND…. HEALTH!!! I wonder if Margo & team ever took that into consideration while they were….., ahhh.. you know. Would you bet that they did?? I wouldn’t.
Jesus, With all due respects but allow me to disagree. Drunk drivers DON’T INTEND to hurt anyone, Margo and his team DID INTEND to hurt someone!! There IS a difference. Statistics prove that a drunk driver commits this offense many times before he’s actually caught. Statistics also say most ALL burglers, thieves, frauds, shoplifters, bullies, wife beaters, casino and income tax cheats… and other transgressers commit their said times MANY times before they ARE STOPPED/CAUGHT, against their own will. Does this actually mean that Margo and team have done this before?? hmmmm… NO, but… what’s the odds on this was his “first time”?? I’m not saying he definitely has BUT there is PLENTY of room for suspicious doubt, right? Personally I don’t feel he should be banned for life but if they, the CSAC, decide not to reinstate Margo’s license yet I can clearly see why. Maybe they, like many other fans and even just plain imparcial citizens, feel that 1 year isn’t enough for the offense. Some even feel that he never should be allowed to fight again, which is what I consider too harsh. BUT… I do feel that another year is fair and acceptable. Like I said previously, one year was only a well deserved rest after two hard fights, especially after the Mosley fight. Peace!
The guy served his time. He should be allowed to reapply for his license now. If he is denyed then he should just fight in Mexico. I think he has a fight lined up in May in Mexico. It may not be the kind of fight we want to see but the guy needs to make a living. He has a family to take care of.
Drunk drivers get their license back after they pay their fine and and sit out the suspended license. They put people in danger too. I don’t see how this could be any different unless you want to knit pick this.
I don’t want to get all caught up in anyone’s faith but Jesus does forgive but he also said that one must obay the laws and athorities, right? No, “he didn’t kill anyone” like you say, so according to YOU then we should we open up the prisons and let everyone out who hasn’t killed anyone?? Why, because Jesus already forgave them?? No Bother Juan, it don’t work that way and the Word doesn’t say that. By the way… Have you given any thought that he certainly COULD’VE KILLED someone?? Jesus loves the sinner, Jesus loves thieves and rapist too, no doubt BUT…. they have to pay their debts for their actions and transgressions to society. Jesus loves you, me and Margarito but that doesn’t make us ABOVE THE LAW!! Sin has consequences, sometimes more than others. I began serving the Lord in prison many years ago. Should’ve they commuted my sentence because I gave my life to Christ with a repented heart?? After all, I didn’t kill anyone but did commit crimes against my fellow man. I forgive Margo for hurting OUR sport but forgiving him and allowing him to fight at the moment are COMPLETELY TWO DIFFERENT THINGS!!! Paz and muchas bediciones para ti Hermano Juan.
That’s hard but if Jesus forgives why not others that are imperfect.
I say let give him a chance as long as he didn’t kill anyone. Give him a benefit of a doubt. He is still a excellent boxer that i like to see. Why not we are all sinners. They should check everyones handraps from now on.
Most recently…. it seems as though the CSAC isn’t too anxious to give Margarito their “blessings” to fight again. The ABC has also expressed their thoughts against the re-licensing. Without a doubt there will be MORE negative feedback towards the CSAC if they do license him than if they don’t, this they surely know. Margarito will probably fight again in Mexico before he is once again allowed to do so in the U.S. of A. This will continue to be a rather “touchy” matter because many fans consider what Margo and Capetillo intended to do as a horrendously serious offense and honestly believe that he/they’ve done this before, even IF he/they didn’t. Since their credibility is for all practical purposes non-exsistant, nobody will believe them, whether they did or not. They made up their bed and must now sleep in it. No one to blame but themselves.
Well… I don’t feel that ONE year is enough “punishment”. After the beat down Margarito received from Mosley a year was more like a well deserved rest, of sorts. Another year would be more of a true/honest punishment that fits the CRIME. Nobody can say with any proof that they have done this before BUT… it’s kind of hard not to beleive they haven’t. The point is that they got CAUGHT this one time RED HANDED and ONCE IS ENOUGH! Taking into account the SERIOUSNESS of the offense the CSAC should wait up to a year before even considering re-instatement. In Margarito’s case one year was very little more than a needed rest and NOT a true punishment.
This guy should be banned for life!!!…illegal wraps not can only hurt someone’s career but their life…Bob Arum should know best from the past…too bad he’s all about the money
