IBF and WBC Silver Bantamweight Champion Abner Mares silenced Joseph Agbeko and his critics with a unanimous decision victory on Saturday, December 3, 2011 at Honda Center in Anaheim, California.
The rematch featured almost no questionable blows, and Mares landed more total punches and power shots despite fighting the final 10 rounds with a deep cut near his right eye from a punch.
“I’m happy that my fans finally saw my true boxing skills,” said Mares, the crowd favorite who grew up in nearby Hawaiian Gardens. “I beat him the first time, and I beat him again. I knew I was winning the whole fight.”
In the co-main event, Panama’s Anselmo Moreno kept his WBA bantamweight belt in his American debut, winning a steady unanimous decision over Vic Darchinyan.
“I lost the fight,” admitted Darchinyan, the former bantamweight and super flyweight titleholder. “It was not my night. He beat me and I was here to fight.”
On the other hand, Moreno who returned to Panama yesterday said
“I would like to face the best of my division,” said Moreno. “I want to prove that I am among the best and I would like to meet people like Mexican Jorge “Travieso” Arce and the best of my weight.”
Moreno could be Mares’ next opponent, Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer said.
This was a much better fight than “other” rematch: Cotto vs Margarito 2.
What a great all action fight, Mares looked great and was able to put up a great performance while being able to handle the cut eye. Kid has future!
Mares, along with his trainers and handlers made all the adjustments to correct the low-punching problem, they did everything right, and the judges got the scores right. Abner Mares looked terrific. Mares has star potential and I can’t wait to see him perform again.
