Top Rank, Bob Arum has confirmed WBC champion Humberto Soto (53-7-2, 32KOs) will take on Marco Antonio Barrera (66-7, 43KOs) in Mexico City. The date is still up in the air, but two possible dates are September 11 or September 25.
This should be an interesting bout, Barrera being from Guadalajara, Jalisco and Soto from Tijuana, Baja California oh man I can’t wait.
“Barrera against Soto is a great match up,” Said Bob Arum. “They’ve been eyeing each other for a long, long time so this one, its going to be a classic.”

nhen ahhhh… In my book Edgar is correct, Barrera has very little chance in winning this fight, let alone knocking Soto out. Oh yes, anything is possible but in this case it’s HIGHLY UN-PROBABLE. Man, believe me when I say that it’s not easy accepting nor typing this but… it’s REALITY. Soto, who is not an overly great fighter is still at the top of his game. No, I don’t believe that he’ll be on top of the 135Lb division for an extended length of time but he’s still a solid enough champ to handle Barrera. I see Barrera going on ‘survival mode’ late in the fight in an effort to go distance as Soto’s arsenal repeatedly finds it’s mark and realizes that winning the fight is virtually out of the question. There no doubt in my mind that Soto will win AND… there’s no doubt in my mind that Barrera will LOSE!
I’ve admired Marco Antonio ever since he defeated a fighter that I once worked with, Daniel “Cobra” Jimenez, whom Barrera won his first world title from a long time ago (1995) and I still do but I’m just trying to keep it… REAL.

Soto last fight was against “EL campeon Azteca” Ricardo Dominguez who had won the Mexican TV station TV Azteca’s boxing tournament.
That was an easy fight for Soto, who dominated an opponent with limited skills.
And I agree, Soto may not be a great fighter, but he is a very good one, and right now he is on top of his game, I see a corner stoppage for Barrera on this fight.
Yes, I saw Soto’s last fight and so did Barrera, which might be the reason Marco feels confident enough to want this fight. But I don’t see Barrera wearing Soto down. He simply just doesn’t own the same intensity and arsenal that he once did that will be NECESSARY take Soto to the brink. I widh he did but… what I wish for and REALITY are on the opposite sides of the ring this time around, in my humble estimation. Paz!!
I dont know if you saw soto’s last fight but he got way to tired in the last couple of rounds when diaz started to dominate, i wish it were a draw but if soto wins i hope he goes against pacquiao and knock him out just like his brother, i also hate seeing mexican vs mexican but those are the only good fights now unlike pacquiao vs clottey
Tiajuana Sadly, I have to agree. Soto will capitalize on this BIG lifetime opportunity and… Barrera will be calling it quits HOPEFULLY after it’s all is said and done. I believe that it can/will be a competive fight for up to about the 4th round or so but after that Soto will gradually pull away and will be punishing Barrera in the process as the fight enters the latter rounds.
What we saw of Marco in his last fight against a mediocre oppopnent is basically what’s left of this once great fighter and future Hall Of Famer. I don’t expect any major improvement, especially now that he will be facing a high quality and caliber fighter in Soto. No, Humberto Soto isn’t a great fighter but a very good and effective one, no doubt. Besides, he doesn’t have to be ‘great’ to desisively defeat the 2010 version of Marco Antonio Barrera.

Are you kidding me? Soto will walk all over Barrera, Barrera is not even 50 percent the fighter he used to be, Soto is on top of his game at this moment.
Judging from the last Barrera fight, where he showed no movement, no legs and was very slow, I don’t see a away for Barrera to win against Soto.
I still think Soto needs to stay at superfeatherweight to be 100%. I agree with Israel that Soto looked drained in the Diaz fight. Good luck to him.
Barrera has no business going back to lightweight to fight Soto or anybody else…
I got a draw, Soto seems so drained with he fought diaz and well barrera is up in weight with age, barrera will set up a late rally and win by UA or draw
Hate to say but Barrera will take a beating in this fight and Soto is at the peak of his game so it will be tough for the Baby Face Assassin to pull this off. I have Soto winning a decision or late knockout but you never know Barrera could have something left in him.
I’ll go for Soto on this. Late round KO or UD. Soto is on top of his game right now.
JESUS Actually, before the final bell of Marco’s latest win I sort of already had a feeling that a 4th fight with Morales was possibly going to be proposed, a fight that I also feel, as you, is basically unnecessary. Can it still happen?? Well… I guess it depends on how GOOD or.. how BAD Barrera performs against Soto. Will Barrera be another of those greats that refuse to “smell the coffee”?? Or will a loss finally convince him that it’s all over?? I guess we’ll just have to wait and see.
Thank you laxone and EZ for your comments. I really hope Barrera retires for good after this fight, win-lose-or draw. He has nothing less to prove. Besides, he is not broke and has his health intact. He gave us the Morales trilogy and the great victories over Hameed and McKinney. I think he had a great career. No need for a fourth Morales fight.
Jeaus Yeah, I too wish that this fight could’ve/should’ve happened a couple of years ago, at leaat. To expect Barrera to be The Baby Faced Assassin we all remember is stretching things a bit too much. It might be a competitive fight for a couple of rounds but.. then I expect Soto to take command for the remaider of the contest. I’d hate to even think about Marco getting stopped but… it’s not like I’m in denial. It’s possibilities will be there, no doubt. I hope I’m eventually proven wrong about this but….. ahhh…. oh well.

Good fight, maybe a couple years too late!
The question is, can Barrera still make 135 lbs and be effective at this stage ? Five years ago, no problem.
Soto is at the top of his game right now, so it’s not an easy fight for the Baby Face Assassin.

As much as it’s hurts to say so… I believe Marco will lose, yes sir, lose pretty convincingly. He scored a decent win his last time out BUT…. he didn’t look look THAT good. Well… not good enough in my humble opinion.
