Ricky Hatton is closing in on a showdown with Manny Pacquiao.
Golden Boy chief executive Richard Schaefer says talks with both parties are going well – despite Floyd Mayweather Jr’s attempts to hijack the deal.
Pacquiao’s promoter Bob Arum says he is hopeful of a deal being made, while Hatton appears happy to take on the Filipino following his stunning win over Oscar De La Hoya earlier this month.
And Schaefer is confident the fight will be finalized sooner rather than later – with May 2, 2009, being touted as the date.
“I’m encouraged by the way it’s going, and I’m talking to the Hattons (on Friday) again,” he said.
“You really have two of the most popular fighters of their generation fighting each other, and that’s the kind of fight we want to make.”

Hatton is known to want a rematch Mayweather Jr, the only man to beat him in 46 professional contests.
But with the Pretty Boy retiring after their fight 12 months ago, he is likely to want a tune-up bout before going in with either the Hitman, or Pacquiao.
That would pave the way for the pair to face-off in what could be an unofficial eliminator next summer.
Hatton has promised to stage one more mega fight in Britain before hanging up his gloves, but Schaefer wants to see any match with Pacquiao take place in Las Vegas.
“This is a fight with tremendous global appeal, and both of them have built up a very strong following here,” he said.
“With Manny’s following in Asia and Ricky’s support in Europe, you could say Las Vegas is the center of everything.”
Hopefully the rumors of Hatton getting injure in training are not true:

If anyone goes to the weigh-in check how his right elbow looks!
am a filipino and am proud to tell everybody in the world that “his the man, a filipino, aman with good spirit and a real fighter”. go manny, make every filipino all over the world proud of you.
we have seen how manny morphosed from a one-dimentional fighter to the kind of fighter he is today under the tutelage of freddie roach. Years ago, manny had the tendency to plod his opponent with devil- may- care attitude. Not anymore.
Can we say that of hatton? Hatton’s style is still the same. Come forward and dish his body shots without taking care of his head. If he does that to manny, and there is no reason to think that he won’t do itthis time, then we may hear glass breaking on fight night when manny plays his music, as roach predicts.
Manny is smart, and we can’t say this of Hatton. Hatton can’t change his style over-night, not even under Mayweather, sr. His trainer is good but only in so far as his verbal fight with roach is concerned. hehehe
so folks, come fight night, don’t close your eyes because the end may be sudden and sweet for you know who… manny of course.
By the way for Floyd Mayweather Jr., fighting the Pacman is not interesting bout or Mayweather Jr fighting to any other boxers. I suggest he’s matches will be inside the Disco bar where he will enjoy much of his time dancing and hugging is partner. He is not a fighter but rather a dancing queen. he..he..
Paquiao vs Hatton May 02, 2009 fight. Pacman will knock out Hatton both earlier or later round. It depends on the chances of Paquiao. For Hatton he will win the fight but the problem is, if he can connect solid shots against Pacman if not his face will look like Diaz and thats for sure. So he better trained hard and must changed boxing skill more superior that Paquiao. Mabuhay Philippines.
It will be a great fight and contrary to popular propaganda its 52 – 48 in favor of Manny.
