“Boxing fans have waited a long time to see Israel Vazquez back in action and we’re excited to have him headlining here in front of his hometown fans in Los Angeles,” said Oscar de la Hoya, President of Golden Boy Promotions. “Israel is without question one of the best fighters in the world and he’s looking forward to proving himself once again in the coming months, beginning with this fight on October 10.”
Two-time junior featherweight world champion Israel Vazquez (43-4, 31 KOs) of Huntington Park, California had been a well-kept secret for much of his career, but after stoppages of Oscar Larios, Ivan Hernandez and Jhonny Gonzalez in 2005-2006, the boxing world quickly embraced him. But it was the Mexico City native’s classic trilogy with Rafael Marquez in 2007-2008 that elevated “Magnifico” to superstardom in the fight game. Vazquez won two of the three bouts against Marquez leaving it all in the ring each time, proving he has the heart of a true warrior. Although he has been sidelined since March of 2008 due to surgery for a detached retina, the 31-year-old Mexico City native has been cleared for battle and he’s ready to take on more challenges in a new weight class – featherweight.
Perennial contender Angel Priolo (30-7, 20 KO’s) has traded punches with the best in the business over the course of his professional career, including Abner Mares, Brian Viloria, Vernie Torres and Jose Nieves. He’s looking to make another run at a world title and Barranquilla, Colombia’s Priolo knows that his road to the top will be shortened considerably should he upset Vazquez on October 10.
“Next Boxing Generation,” which was launched in August of 2008 by Golden Boy Promotions in association with HBO Latin America Group, features the top up and coming Latin American fighters in boxing today in exciting bouts that will appeal to fans across all demographics. In less than a year, the series has seen fights take place throughout Mexico as well as in Argentina, Colombia, Puerto Rico, Uruguay and Panama.
A co-featured bout and a full slate of undercard bouts will be announced shortly.
