Julio Cesar Chavez vs Miguel Cotto is Off

There were some rumors that Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. didn’t want to train with Freddie Roach in the Philippines where Roach is currently training Manny Pacquiao for his scheduled fight with Antonio Margarito on November 13.

Well it’s official, Chavez Jr. will not fight Miguel Cotto on December 4. Not willing to train in the Philippines is a bogus excuse. Chavez should just admit he’s afraid of Cotto, Cotto was the only worthy opponent he could have faced but now Top Rank is considering a possible move to split the two fighters into separate bouts on the same date in Atlantic City.

As of now, rumor is that Miguel Cotto will face Kermit Cintron and Chavez will face Pawel Wolak who was scheduled to fight Chavez in September before this fiasco.

What’s your opinion about Chavez not fighting Miguel Cotto?

  1. I think Chavez jr has been fighting wack boxers, he still hasnt fought any big names.Really, i think he wants to end up having the same great record that his dad had, but his dad went through a lot of great boxers. So Jr needs to step up to the plate and fight either Cotto or canelo, either or he will get his ass beat.Hes like 40? and 0, C’mon LETS BE REAL!!!!!!!

  2. I THINK IT WAS A SMART MOVE ON CHAVEZ JR PART. ROACH WAS NOT GOING TO GIVE HIM THE ATTENTION HE NEEDS FOR COTTO. COTTO IS NOT DUDDY WHERE HE CAN SWING IT HOPING HE GETS A GOOD OUT COME.

NO EXCUSES BUT I THINK HE WAS GOING TO GET MORE OF A BEATING THEN TRAINING I THINK HE NEEDS 1 OR 2 FIGHTS UNDER ROACH TRAINING TO TUNE UP AND WORK ON STAMINA IF HE RUNS OUT OF GAS HE’S DEAD.

CHAVEZ JR BEEN A LAZY SLACKER THATS WHY HE HAS NO RESPECT HE HAS BEEN LOOKING POOR THATS WHY HE GETS NO LOVE…. NOW THAT HE STEPS UP NO ONE CARE NOR BELIVES.

  3. I agree, but that’s an insult to his trainer for thew Wolack fight. In other words, he is saying that this trainer is only good enough for guys like Wolack.

  4. Pawel Wolack is no Miguel Cotto, so in others he knows he could beat Wolack with out freddie Roach, his only been with Roach one fight so I am sure chavez can handle Wolack

  5. I miss the logic here…
Chavez won’t fight Cotto without Freddie Roach, but he will agree to fight Pawel Wolack ? He should just be off the card completely or at least not make it a televised fight. Can somebody get Canelo to beat his ass once and for all. Or is Chavez afraid of a 20 year old welterweight too ???

  6. Makes perfect sense. He can fight him now and lose, or fight him sometime by the end of next year and have a good chance on winning. hhhmmmmm. what decision should his promoters make???

  7. Chavez Jr. is not even in the same class as Cotto or many others. Kermit Cintron would destroy him within 2 rounds. Let’s be real. If his last name wasn’t Chavez he wouldn’t have Roach in his corner and he wouldn’t be lined up to fight a guy like Cotto. He’s be a “B-rate” fighter making a few thousand dollars a fight. I’d love to see him fight one of these “real” fighters. Actually I wouldn’t. It would be a short night and quite possibly the end of his career.

  8. Training with Manny Pacquiao will be beneficial to both Chavez Jr. and Manny P., however I feel he is not ready to take on Miguel Cotto at this stage of his career. I feel he has got to do bulk up more and improve on his stamina. If he runs out of steam against Cotto, there is no doubt Miguel will finish him off easy. If he does not go train with Manny he has missed on a good oppurtunity to match up with the sport’s fastest boxer and this does not come often. P)hilippine boxing fan’s are also eager to see him in action. Too bad he passed of on the trip.

  9. TIA JUANA You’re right, Chavez jr isn’t Freddie’s top priority right now and probably never will be. Roach has far more talented fighters in his gym than the Kid but on the other hand NONE have the market value of young Julio Jr, thus NONE for the moment repre$ent the $ame level of intere$t as Junior for Freddie, economically $peaking.

Personally I like this Kid, surely not because of extraordinary talents, but because I believe he was convinced to give the game a try due to his legendary name and it’s marketability, accepted the challenge, developed, and despite the over-hype, various close calls and heavy criticism he has continued to press on and has done quite well for himself.

As for the mentioned fight for Chavez Jr vs Pawel Wolack, I believe that he will give The Kid a run for his money. I’m almost expecting a change in opponent, a lesser challenge, in order to ensure a more lucrative fight in 2011 vs Cotto.

  10. If Chavez Jr. had a chance to be a legit world champion this was his shot, i really thought Chavez jr. would take this fight especially with Roach in his corner. who does he think he is? In the Boxing world things are not handed to you everything is earned. if he thinks he is to good to train in the philipines with Paquiao and Roach then he is done. this was an opertunity of a life time for him to grow as a fighter. Good luck fighting Cintron, Angulo or Canelo Alvarez. Chavez window is closing to be a real champ.

  11. Right on the money EZ E, I think Chavez Jr. needs Roach more than Roach needs Chavez right now, and a fight against Cotto is no walk in the park for no one, and for Chavez Jr. could be more like a walk to the morgue, he really needs to be ready , balls or no balls, that will be the fight of his life, all the bums he has fought mean nothing and at the same time can be just a memory if he somehow is able to beat Cotto, I still can’t picture that in my mind, but what I do know is he needs to train 110% for that fight, and Roach will be concentrating more on Pacquiao than Jr. at this time, so for Chavez Jr. it is a smart move to hold Cotto for next year, Cotto wont be any younger and Jr. has more time to prepare with a more focus Roach.

  12. I think the reason why he don’t want to fight Cotto because Freddie Roach said if he don’t want to go to Philippine to spar with pacman he dont want to fight Cotto. You cant blame Chaves for me he dont want to train or spar with pacman
because he will fighting with Margarito and both of them are mexican thats my opinion

  13. Well, maybe it’s not the Kid that is scared, it could be that his team thinks that they can milk his career a bit more before ri$king it all against Cotto. Personally, I haven’t seen the Kid do anything that will make me believe he can defeat Cotto, with or without Roach. Certainly his fight vs John Duddy ONLY means that he could beat John Duddy, but so can any of the top 25 middleweights. Ask Billy(Who??)Lyell, who was a 37th ranked jr middleweight that slapped Duddy silly when he handed Irish John his first humiliating loss. There seems to be an idea out there that Freddie’s fighters are unbeatable, which is far from the truth. Freddie gets good talent to work with after they were previously successful under other trainers. Yes, he surely deserves recognition because he’s a very good trainer and strategist, but so are others. Now, how good actually are his fighters when they have MORE confidence in Roach than in THEMSELVES??

Anyway, I was called last night by someone close to the Cotto team here and Cintron is being mentioned but it’s not close to being finalized, only considered. Cotto’s operation on his shoulder seems to have healed quicker/better than they expected. For a while it was thought that Miguel wasn’t going to fight until next year. What I was told was that there’s a good chance that the Cotto vs Chavez jr fight might be made for April or May, if the both emerge victorious. I will add that Pawel Wolack will be tougher than many believe.

  14. naa i think its a good excusee, freddy roach only trained him for about a month and he performed well against duddy, so 6 months with him hell better and its his trainer.
