Julio Cesar Chavez Senior is widely considered one of the greatest fighters of all time and his warrior spirit made him a rock star in his native Mexico. Chavez Jr was beaten down, chewed up and spit out by Andrzej Fonfara, so badly that Chávez quit from the corner before the tenth round.
After getting knocked down for the first time Chavez was bleeding from his nose and suffered bad swelling around both eyes he told his trainer Joe Goossen “stop the fight.. I am done.”
“I know Chavez is tough fighter. He don’t quit. He’s in good shape. But what I saw in the first round, I knew I would win this fight,” Fonfara said, a native of Warsaw, Poland, who fights out of Chicago. “He hit me with one good punch, I catch it, and I say this guy don’t have punch because he hit me as hard as he can.
“I’m open a little bit and I move because I don’t fear his punches and his power.”
At the time of the stoppage, Fonfara was up on all the cards with scores of 89-80 and 88-81.
