Yesterday at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, CA, Top Rank President Bob Arum officially announced the Julio Cesar Chavez Jr vs Sebastian Zbik World Middleweight Championship bout on June 4th at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, Fighting on the undercard, Baltimore Ravens safety and undefeated cruiserweight Tommy Zbikowski will be making his Los Angeles debut.
Saturday June 4th, will be a history in the making for both fighters and should be a sold out crowd. What does it mean for either fighter?
Being the son of legendary boxer Julio Cesar Chavez Sr., Chavez Jr to win this world title would be an honor because his father will shortly be inducted to the International Boxing Hall of Fame the following week.
“I thank Zbik for giving me this opportunity to fight him. I am very happy to get this opportunity and what better city to do it in but Los Angeles where my father won his first championship?” Said Chavez Jr.
“He’s ready for a title shot” said Fernando Beltran (Chavez Jr.’s manager).
Trainer Freddie Roach had a few words to say, “We’re looking forward to a nice long training camp and we will have a new world champion in our hands.”
There was laughter in the crowd after because while Freddie was training Chavez Jr. in Mexico, he had his watch stolen so Chavez Jr. is promising a new watch if he wins.
As for the current champion, Germany’s Sebastian Zbik, he will be making his U.S. debut in his first title defense. He was elevated to WBC middleweight champion in January when Sergio Martinez vacated the title. When asked if Zbik would be nervous or uncomfortable since he usually fights in his own country, Zbik simply replied, “I don’t think it matters to me where I fight.”
Dietmar Poszwa, who is Zbik’s manager, said he is excited for June 4th because this would be the 4th German fighter to be fighting in the U.S. and the ability for Zbik to be the 2nd to win in the U.S.
Two great fighters, both undefeated and ready to make their big debuts. This is going to be a great night of boxing at the Staples Center.
Now, which one will you be in favor of winning?

@ Jaymasta, almost 8 years of pro boxing, he’s supposed to be a professional fighter and at the very least should have some discipline by now, but his lack of making weight for his fights (even turning to a banned substance to try to make weight) and his quality of opponents has grown tiresome. I tried to be a fan I really did but the guy is unprofessional and will be exposed sooner or later.
i would love to see any yall beat billy lyell with ease. I mean dont get me wrong hes not the best fighter in his class. but to be a pro boxer you cant just be some chump… an to have won all amateur fights an pro….must mean your alright. I mean hes only 25. technique comes with experience. Look at Erik Morales people didnt think he would be as great. but then he beat the crap out of some bad dudes. including Manny Pacqiao. so im just saying i know he aint top quality….but hes got alot of time to improve…an i sure as hell aint gonna underestimate him.
With all due respect Danny, but Chavez is a fraud NOW. He has a better record than Floyd Mayweather. How much more time does he need. He’s been a pro since 2003. You wanna give this guy more time ?? He did absolutely nothing to deserve a shot at a major title. This guy fights a bunch of bums. No one here can name his last three opponents without looking them up. I know the Chavez name in boxing carries a big burden. They are milking it though, and yes, he sells tickets.
You also want to make the Canelo comparison. Canelo is on the same boat and his first title defense is against who ?? Chavez will get an easy, never before heard of opponent, in his first title defense. Assuming of course that he wins the title. Zbik might just be what the doctor ordered. Chavez and Canelo have the makings of a great champion. They actually have boxing skills and great potential to do even more and have better names on there records.
Mr Brown got it right with his comments too.
Look why hate on Chavez Jr. Yeah There’s other fighters that are good but not exciting as Chavez Jr. He sells tickets and who knows maybe after he wins the middleweight belt he’s going to have to prove to the fans and boxing critics that he’s a top fighter. Stop the hate and give it sometime. If he’s a fraud then in time it will show. This is a big fight and if he does beat zbik that’s anyou would have to respect him cuz he beat a undefeated champ. Not like canelo who fought hatton. Canelo fought Carlos baldomir a washed up fighter for a shot at the belt. Chavez Jr wins by ko between the 8th and 10th rd
Listen……….They have to take that spoon out of Chaves Jr mouth.
Stop babying this guy. He won’t fight real opponents, he’s fraud period.
Take the the diapers off and wear some underwear Chaves and be a man for once and fight.
I would have liked to continue reading your article mam but you lost me at Julio Cesar Chaves? Who is he?
@Jony-Boy,
I agree with what you said, but at the same time we all know this is a big conspiracy within the WBC. Although Zbik is relatively unknown in the USA, I get the feeling that he will come to fight and win. That’s not usually the case with Chavez’s previous opponents. Felix Sturm was a relative unknown before he came here and fought De La Hoya. In my opinion, Sturm won that fight. De La Hoya had no business fighting at middleweight and neither does Chavez. This would be the most dangerous opponent to date that Chavez will face. Anothert thing, Sergio Martinez has already challenged Chavez if he wins the title. Logically speaking he would be the #1 rated middleweight and thus worthy of a shot. Let’s see what excuse they come up with for not giving Martinez another title shot. I blame more Chavez’s manager, his promotor, and even the WBC for the opponents he’s had in the past. Nonetheless, I really think this will be a good fight. I hope I’m right.
Whoever wins, wins I don’t really care cause the fact is not so sure of Zbik because I never heard of him (not that i’m shocked about that) but I know Chavez doesn’t deserve a title shot after fighting the type of competition he’s fought. I am a big fan of J.C. Chavez Sr. and glad he’s getting inducted I just wish his son had the determination and heart that his father had and wasn’t being spoon-fed belts and opponents. I can’t wait to see what unknown European or what club fighter all of a sudden is #1 contender if Chavez wins.
