The retired light heavyweight champion took off his gloves and picked up a microphone to sing backing vocals with Team Calzaghe for a soft rock song about his career.
The undefeated southpaw turned vocalist together with his dad and uncles when they filmed a video for the tune, called Gonna Miss Him Now He’s Gone.
Joe’s dad Enzo came up with the idea.
The 60-year-old manager, a former session musician who has recorded as many as 70 songs, used to work in the music industry.
“It’s about the passage of his life. We sing about going from the Arms to the Garden,” stated Joe’s dad. “We sing ‘Hopkins, Jones and Lacey, those Yankees have been tamed.’ It’s the whole story. And it says how he met the Queen and shook her hand.”
“I like to write a bit of music. It keeps me busy. When I’m stressed out I write some lyrics down,” Enzo said. “We have got a catalogue of songs; we are looking at releasing an album. I’ve not got a title but we have 14 songs for the album.”
“It’s been turned into something a bit like the Chili Peppers, a bit rockish. I like the style of it. The tune remained the same but the roughness of the chords changed from a beat ballad.”
The song was initially recorded at Enzo’s own studio in Newbridge before being mastered in Bristol. The song will be available on iTunes.
